Error "Your GPU Memory is full"

PostThu Jan 23, 2020 11:17 am

Hi,
I'm working on BMPCC 4K footage, in BRAW, 5:1 4K. Proxy mode: quarter resolution; Render cache: user
When I begin a basic color correction, slow down clips, apply optical flow and stabilization, appear an error "Your GPU Memory is full - Try reducing the timeline resolution or the number of correctors."
When I try to render the footage, Resolve failed to render.
I have to restart PC and then Resolve render correctly.
It's impossible to work in this condition.
My company ask me to elevate the quality of video production, so I decided to make only 4K video corporate instead of FULL HD videos (I have the BMPCC Mark I before). Working without artificial lights inside shops (drugstore in particular) the BRAW finally give me a very helpful hands with color correction.
But with the old FULL HD footage in Prores my PC didn't have any problems. Now It's difficult.

Any thoughts about that?
The PC should be upgraded?

Main hdd drive: SSD 850 Samsung EVO 250 GB
CACHE Davinci: SSD Sandisk Ultra II 480

Thanks

My thinking is that upgrading to a 2080 Ti would probably help. A 2070 even.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

I fixed that GPU error message on my 2012 MacBook Pro retina by switching to "Metal" in preferences.

You need atleast 8 GB of VRAM on your GPU, we went for GPU's with 16 GB to be save when we switch over to 6k bayer sensors for true 4k rgb output. For 8k bayer you need atleast 16GB and to be on the save side 24 GB (till now 16GB have always been enough for us with 7k bayer footage (RED 7k.R3D 4:1 25 fps)).

Thank you all for replies.

- The 2080Ti it's a 1300 euro GPU card (at least in Italy), for the CPU/MOBO/CASE+RAM+SSD we spent 1000 euro, so It should be difficult convince them to buy it. An affordable one? You suggest the 2070, maybe a rtx 2060 super 8 GB could be a compromise?
Today I discover than the GPU, while rendering, insert a black frame through a smooth cut transition, that in the edit page doesn't exist. I think it's a faliure of the GPU memory....

@Pacific: where is the preference you refer of?

@Roen Davis: mmm, so your suggest? I have 4K braw footage and all I want to do is a basic color correction/grading, with a bit of stabilization and speed/slow down footage

In my case it was the GPU driver: frequent "GPU memory full" messages with version 441.66 and almost none with version 431.70 (“Studio” edition in both cases). But that was with a different GPU (see signature) and other footage (4K, H.264)...

This one is not to expensive https://it.pcpartpicker.com/product/s2Jtt6/xfx-radeon-vii-16-gb-video-card-rx-vegma3fd6 and it has 16 GByte of VRAM and when that isn't enough it can make use of the system RAM when you have HBCC turned on(it should always be turned on in Davince Resolve).

It's not a horrible option.

I have found similar issues in the last few days with very large stills (tif @ 8400x6800) with moves on them. I found that it was rendered into cache. It was difficult to clear and in the end I reduced the dimensions - it’s only 1920 delivery.

Hi,
While waiting for my company to find the budget for the new video card, I found an Nvidia Quadro 600 (2011 GPU) in an old company workstation. I thought of using it together with the 1060 and connecting it to the monitors, to take some workload off the 1060 and make the 1060 work in the background only in the rendering phase. Could it be a good (temporary) solution at no cost? Thank you

The NVIDIA driver you have in your signature has had issues with BRAW if GPU decoding is switched on. Recommend you operate with the Preference settings to turn off GPU Decoding for BRAW, or update to one of the NVIDIA drivers in my signature.
