Next Node/Previous Node order

PostThu Jan 30, 2020 2:26 pm

Hi, when grading I always use the next node and previous node shortcuts to jump from node to node.

Unfortunately this follows the numbers of the nodes, instead of the node order of the graph. Is there a way to change that?

Every time I insert a node between two other nodes, this messes up my navigation.

Thank you
Max :)

I find it catches me on some things too.
Would it not be ideal to renumber the nodes when one is inserted?

Thank you for replying. Is there a way to renumber?

If I feel the need I just copy the nodes out to create the space for the new one.

The only time it really bothers me (as opposed to the OCD me wanting the nodes to number sequentially) is when I am using the keyframeable dynamic grading area and I hit the node based on the number that I think it should be rather than the correct one.

There is not. That is a good idea for a feature suggestion.

My workaround for this is to use a Fixed Node Setup for features and longform projects, so the number of nodes is exactly the same on every shot and you can very quickly jump to the same nodes that are constantly being adjusted. I find this works better on the Advanced Panels, where you have a button to jump to a specific node # with just a couple of keystrokes. It's harder on the Mini Panel (or the Tangent Elements), but you can kind of hobble around with some effort.

I also have a fixed node setup but unfortunately for me this does not solve but cause my problem. I have my color correction first, then my secondary grading and a grain node at the end. As each shot requires a different number of secondary grading nodes, I do not want to use a fixed number of nodes for that. How does your node setup look like?

As you see on my screenshot, my node numbers are mixed up.

Thank you, that is a good workaround.

I copy the node with the wrong number, delete it, insert a new node and paste the old node into the new one. It is not the fastest way to do things but at least it works. I hope there will be a new feature for numbering based on positions in the graph soon.

My method is to use the mouse, click on the node I want to adjust.

Mouse/keyboard is the norm, even for grading (without a panel), so it's no problem.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

I would refer you to MixingLight.com, which has some excellent features on Fixed Node Structures and how to come up with a method of working that covers your specific project. There's been a few node ideas published on the net; here's one used last season on the Roseanne sitcom:

My technique is to come up with a maximum number of nodes I typically use -- for me, that's around 18, but can sometimes go to 22 or even 26 nodes -- but bypass them until I need them. They're already in the order I need for the best possible results, bearing in mind the Order of Node Operations:

Of course that works but I like to use as many shortcuts as possible to work faster. I keep my mouse in the lower third of the screen to do adjustments and I use my keyboard to switch between clips, nodes and do many more things.

Thank you for sharing your node structure and that platform. I will check it out.

I do use a fixed node structure (Thanks to Florian “Utzi”, a German fellow that showed it to me), and I alternate between using the mouse and recall the number (like Marc does.)

Giving that when i select a different node than the “basic ones”, usually I have to pull a keys or draw a shape with the mouse, picking the mouse up does not change the speed...

The Advanced Panels will give you even more shortcuts. It's not cheap, but what you're essentially paying for is the ability to work faster and come up with more options quickly.

Yeah, I think everybody does the same thing. If my hand is already by the mouse, I'll use that. I have told my students, "the more you can keep your hands on the panel, they better off you are." I've lobbied for awhile for an "Advanced Panel II" that would have a built-in mouse controller trackball and an integrated drawing tablet, and I think that would keep 97% of all operations on the panel and away from a keyboard or a traditional mouse.

+1

I'd also like to be able to select a specific node by entering the node number, much like how I can move to a specific shot in the Color timeline on my JLCooper Eclipse CX panel by typing in the shot number on the numeric keypad.

Another idea would be to have a "Renumber nodes" option that would renumber the order of the nodes in a sequential order from left to right.

I think the Eclipse kind of fell off the edge of the world due to competition from Avid and Tangent many years ago. I no longer see the CX listed on their website:

https://www.jlcooper.com/_php/family.ph ... ipseseries

I'm not knocking it -- I'm just saying I think there are better options available in 2020. The "Enter Node # -> Jump to Node" control is in the Advanced Panel and has been for more than 12-13 years, but that would be a tough one to duplicate. Features like this, plus the scroll color preview on the timeline, are the kinds of things that save an ocean of time for me with the Advanced Panel. I think Joey D'Anna on MixingLight has talked about coming up with a way to do it with a Fixed Node Structure and a Streamdeck controller, but I don't know how far he got with it.

Another idea would be to have a "Renumber nodes" option that would renumber the order of the nodes in a sequential order from left to right.

I think that has kind of been done with Resolve 17, if I'm not mistaken. <minutes pass> Yes, if I add a brand-new node to the middle of an existing tree in 17, all the nodes renumber automatically. There are pros and cons to this approach, particularly with a Fixed Node Structure.

Yeah I really want to switch to the Mini panel, but I have 10 years of muscle memory invested in the Eclipse panel, too much time-sensitive work, and not enough desk space at home to accommodate a Mini, all of which conspire against me to stay with the Eclipse until it’s no longer a tenable option.

Also, If I switched away from the Eclipse, I would most definitely sorely miss its ability to jump to specific shots using the numeric keypad, which I use all the time.

I’m surprised that JLCooper is still kicking, and even though they no longer list the EclipseCX on their site, they are still supporting it, and I was surprised a few months ago to get a useful response from JLC support within 24 hours regarding an issue I was having with my Eclipse.
