Source material is stereo, but rendered output is mono

PostThu Jan 30, 2020 8:16 pm

I'm working on a short film and the sound designer gave me a soundtrack (WAV file) that is definitely stereo. I rendered it in Resolve using the default audio settings, and the rendered output is definitely mono. I don't know how to paste an image of these settings here, but I do have a screen grab of them and will be happy to share/paste.

What did I do wrong to render a stereo track as mono?

Thanks!

Right click the audio clip in either the media pool or timeline and select “clip attributes”. What does it show?

Doing a right mouse click in the Media Pool, it shows that the track is stereo, with Embedded Channel 1 is Left and Embedded Channel 2 is Right.

Also, look at that track's header in the timeline. Is there 1.0 or a 2.0 in the top right-hand corner of the track header? If it's a 1.0 (see screen shot below), you set it up as a mono track. To set it as stereo right-click and choose "change track type to" and choose stereo.

I thought for sure that was going to be it, but it is set to 2.0. I will render the video again just to confirm that the settings I'm now seeing result in a mono render. I suppose I could render just the audio and have it go faster & take less space...

I finally had time to get back at this problem again. I ran two audio-only tests: Rendering as a compressed AAC file (such as would be in a rendered video) and rendering as an uncompressed PCM file. In both cases, the rendered audio file was mono... and the source material is clearly stereo. When I play the file on the timeline, I get stereo sound.

Here is what the audio render settings are:

Any thoughts on this? I'm using the free version of Resolve 16 (16.1.2.026).

Thanks!

I have the same problem here with Resolve 16.1.2.
Since I am new to Resolve, coming from Premiere, I had to find this out the hard way - after a video was already uploaded by a client, since I rendered on a laptop and did not check the sound with headphones.

What I tried so far: defined the stereo clip as "stereo" in media tab, in the edit tab and also in fairlight.
Export settings: PCM, Output Track1 Main 1 (Stereo). I can only chose PCM, no other option there.

As an editor trying to get away from Adobe premiere, I find myself having to go back into premiere just to render my project with correct sound...not cool.

Does anyone have any suggestions on this?

I found the best approach when moving from Premiere Pro to Resolve was to go through the training for Resolve as a very first step.

My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

I think I figured out the problem. Under the audio tab in the render settings, there is a box labeled "Render one track per channel". When that box is checked, I get mono. When the box is unchecked, I get stereo. Here is a screen capture showing this setting:

Hope that works for you... took me some playing around and testing to figure it out.

Thanks Bob,

Just saved me a few hours of messing round, strange that this is on by default?

Using Black magic 17.1 I ran into this issue.
I recorded audio IN stereo, the audio IS Stereo according to Resolve:

However the audio was only coming from the left channel in the timeline and playback.

How do I fix this? I do not want to apply both channels to embedded channel 1, my input is actual stereo.
If I do set both Source Channels to Embedded Channel 1 I do get stereo audio but it is just the left channel played back in both L and R
