Rendering freezes for individual clips

Hi all,

I am writing because I have issues with Davinci freezing during the rendering of a series of individual clips. I have tried many things (detailed underneath) and nothing works, I am completely running out of ideas…

Detailed description of the issue:
I trie to render a series of short clips (20 - 30s each). The rendering is set on individual clips. I have about 20 clips to render.
A very basic color grading on each clip (temperature, contrast, color boost, etc…)

The rendering happens to freeze randomly always at the beginning of a new clip: the rendering gets stuck and the remaining time keeps going up. My computer fans slow down which means no real calculation is done.
The davinci window remains partially reponsive: I can click on stop but I cannot close the task. I can quit and save. However, when I close DaVinci, although the window will indeed close, I can observe in my dock that DaVinci is still active and I have to force quit.
As said, the freezing always occurs when reaching a new clip. I have observed that in the export folder, no new file appears for the clip that froze. The cursor in the timeline does crosse the spliting line between the 2 clips for about a frame or 2 but won’t go beyond that (see picture).

It seems to me as if DaVinci fails at creating a new file for the new clip for some reasons ( I can be wrong on this, just my feeling)

Other observation that could be related:
The rendering works fine if instead of individual clips, I render a single clip. However, at the end of the rendering, DaVinci seems to be partially stuck, and same as above, I can close the window but have to force quit the process.
It has never failed at rendering the very first clip, It always occurs later.

Things I tried:
(EVERYTHING I COULD! :) )

I updated the CUDA driver to its present version (see below): no improvement.
I reseted the NVRAM: no improvement
I tried to export to a different disk: usually internal hard drive, but I tried external drives as well: no improvement
I reinstalled the OS (initially Mojave): no improvement
I updated the OS to Catalina (see below): no improvement

Davinci version: 16.1.2.026

macOS Catalina version: 10.15.3
MacBook Pro retina, 15-inch late 2013
Processor 2.6Ghz Quad core Intel Core i7
Memory: 16GB 1600 Mhz DDR3
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2GB Intel Iris Pro 1536MB
CUDA Driver version: 418.163
GPU driver version: 355.11.11.10.10.143

See the logs attached

My overall feeling is that DaVinci fails at completely qitting a rendering process that ends, hence the reason why it won’t fail on very the first clip, might fail at creating a new file for a next clip, and fail at quitting completely a single clip rendering.

Any idea would help, I could indeed consider rendering a single clip, but that would considerably increase my workload!

Thanks for help!!

Anyone has an idea of what else I can try?
It become a real problem for me... And I feel completely stuck on this.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi all,

In case that can be of any interest to anybody here are my findings:

I downgraded Davinci to Version 15.3.1 and that worked perfect from first try.
However My databases were no more compatible, it needs V16.
So I upgraded again to Version 16.0.0.060 and that worked perfect again.

So to sum up: The same project, same settings, same everything, tried with version 16.1.2.026 freezes my renderings while with version Version 16.0.0.060 it works perfect.

I suggest it might be a bug in the program. Should I report it? Where?

Thanks.

Looks like the latest Resolve version has a lot of rendering bugs.
I have the same freezing on individual files render problem. Also in my case on a Macbook laptop rendering as Individual clips will export without sound, despite the sound is enabled:
viewtopic.php?f=21&t=107460#p599875
I have also submitted an issue here that Resolve 16.1.2 will not render XDCAM HD files as Individual files, ending up with "failed to encode the video frame" error:
viewtopic.php?f=21&t=104935&p=580476#p580476. None of them was detected by devs yet. I hope they are doing fine.

UPD: Thanks for your suggestion. I downgraded to 16.1, and was finally able to render three clips in a row without Resolve freezing forever.

Yay that works! DR 16.2 fixes the individual clip render bug.

Cheers

So the render process freezes regularly for me. I can clear out the render cache and sometimes it completes a render successfully. Then then the next time I start Davinci Resolve, rendering freezes. Since I think 16.1 this has been a persistent problem. I am attaching the logs.

I really hope this can be solved. Because I really love Davinici Resolve. But it is currently unusable. None of my projects render.

Ronnie

The logs indicate GPU errors. It would be a good idea to start with some generic debug instructions like this

If you continue to have issues, please provide a full snapshot of your system - the FAQs are your friend here.

Thanks

Thanks for the speedy reply. I have been through the FAQ and tried doing a full clean re-install of the gfx drivers. I have even formated re-installed Windows. As per the FAQ, here is the full system snapshot.

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... qadJehiHGR

I can see only this error which looks like it is GPU related:

Code: Select all
Nvidia codec cannot be initialized with property successfully

but this isn't really helpful. What property exactly? With some information in the logs, maybe I would have a chance to solve it myself.

Just an update. I found that there is a title which seems to trigger the problem. If I make any adjustment to the tittle, no matter how small, the next time I render the project, it renders to the end successfully. Then at some random point in the future, the problem returns. And the render process seems to stop at precisely the same time stamp each time.

Any ideas as to what I can do?

Where is the title from, what type, where are you processing it etc..?
Can you repo with other titles?
if no, please post a link to the title.

The title is what came with DVS and is called "Title Three Line Drop". It would also stop the render at 6.04 seconds. If i add a space to the text, delete the space (as an example), it would render fine until the next time I opened the project again. I have installed version 16.0.0.060 and I have had no problems so far, apart from some minor momentary GUI/Graphical glitches which resolve themselves.

My project consists of a main timeline, into which I add smaller timelines, each of which represent a section of the video. This problem happens in the first sub-timeline at about 6.04 seconds in. I have ad similar problems with other projects. Sometimes I could reliably reproduce the problem, other times not. And simply making some trivial change to some seemingly unrelated effect or title would sometimes fix the problem temporarily.

I would be happy to make the project and all files available if it helps. With this project, the problem always seems to be reliably reproducible. But I would prefer, for obvious reasons, to email a private link to you than make it publicly available here.

Many thanks for your help!

So should I make my project available to Blackmagic developers so that they might find the cause of this problem? :-)

That would help yes. Please provide a link to a DRP file that we can pass on to R&D to examine.

Thanks

So..........Do I just give up on Davinci Resolve?

It certainly seems like support has given up on me.

For me, rendering doesn't even start.. otherwise getting same symptoms. No output file is create, and the remaining time counter keeps going up and up and up.... I can click stop, which marks the job cancelled, but I don't get any other control back. This happens regardless of which part of the timeline I try to render, parts, or the hole, regardless of which profile I select as well..

I see from searches that this has been a recurring theme with DR for quite some time now, which, to be frank, does not bode well for plans of buying this thing :(

(and good bye planned premiere on this video later today... .. )

My rendering job gets stuck in the same place on the timeline too, on a title screen. I'm using the new titler in DaVinci 17 beta 2. And if it doesn't hang during the render then I'll get something like "Render Job 2 failed as the current clip could not be processed", or maybe "Your GPU memory is full", etc. The titles in v 17 are MUCH nicer, but just drag your cursor through each of those, or up and down in the list, and DaVinci will eventually freeze up.

Really, I've never seen so many crashes, hangs, and things that can go wrong, and that definitely includes the last version of 16.

The process of upgrading, downgrading, redoing, etc., may work for a short time but old and new bugs will come back at random points and then you'll be stuck again. I've never wasted this much time trying to figure out something that has such a small payback. I was much better off with Lumafusion on the iPad or Videostudio in Windows.

For anyone with this problem. There's a YouTube video that shows how to work around this. Search for "Rendering Failed - Davinci Resolve 17 - How to fix a rendering error" by John's Films ;)

Everything is working fine for me in the recent 17 betas, and I haven't had a crash in a while.

I should have mentioned this sooner.
