Resolve 16.1.2.026 - Subtitle bug(s)

Hello!
Rather annoying bug this one. When entering subtitles, the program gets slower and slower little by little. When I have entered subtitles to approximately 5 minutes (timeline length) the responsiveness is about: click to trim subtitle clip on timeline and wait for 3 seconds when Resolve is trying to think what to do. If the program is restarted, problem goes away. So, maybe a memory issue? But it is not a project issue, same problem with different project.
Also. Little weird bug is, when entering text, and one line gets filled, Resolve puts a space in the beginning of the next line. This is only when the line in "perfect" length.
Also, some things should be added/changed to speed up the subtitling process. It's absolutely vital that this tool works like a dream because adding titles is sooooo slow and cruel and expensive and repetitive job anyway. First: don't add a word to the text field, that you have to erase every time when entering text. This is madness, and extremely frustrating. Second: why can't I just paste text and resolve would create subtitle automatically? I first have to "add" the title, then erase the placeholder text, and only then I can paste/write. There is already 2 useless steps slowing down, with every subtitle I add. Add the subtitle automatically when I start to write/paste. Also, maybe audio scrub when adjusting title length to help refining the timing?
Also, the fonts in the text box act weird. I quess this is a bug also. Sometimes letters get's like double the size when selecting text. It's an issue with the user interface. Same problem in other places in the program, like with normal text clip text field. Not sure if it is because pasting text.

I'm experiencing this bug right now on DVR16.2.4.
Characters drop slowly on the text box after typing them, at a frequency of 1-2 seconds per character.
I unsuccessfully tried to:
- Reset Track Style to default
- bypass all grades
- close all open timelines
- Turn off all Fairlight effects
- Disable all video tracks
but the bug continues reproducing, gradually increasing the "character dropping" frequency" as I add more subtitles boxes.
Restarting the application solves the problem, temporary, after adding 15-20 subtitles boxes, the subtitle entry text box goes so slow again.

I'm currently experiencing the same problem on DaVinci Resolve 16.2.5. When entering the first few subtitles it works fine, after several more the program starts slowing down, then later almost to the point of crashing after many subtitles have been added.

My subtitles have taken me to a dark dark place with resolve today. constant crashing, unbelievably slow performance all round, not just on subtitles, it's making a small edit change impossible.
Delete the srt and all is fine again. Re import or bring in another, and back to crash crash crash, slow slow slow.
Always happens when you are on a deadline to deliver

Same issue here on 16.2.5 studio on Mac Pro 6.1 12-core - it's driving me insane, i'm about to lose it

- Every action is slow (1 to 3 sec), including selecting an item on the subtitles track
- typing will work, but will take 1 sec per character (!!!) to display updated text, one at a time.
- box selecting multiple entries on the subtitles track is nearly impossible and will freese resolve for up to 10 sec!
Please BMD, tell us it's a bug and that it's gonna get squashed on the next update.
Side question, did it ever work for you guys on a pervious version of V16?

I'm not sure. This is the first time I'm working on a project with this many subtitles so it's difficult to compare it to previous projects but I don't recall having this much problems with it in the past.

Plus when exporting the srt. file or embending captions on the video it doesn't works during rendering. (tested to playback in VLC and Quicktime Player: no subtitles appear, none on the srt none on embended option). The only way has been to burn them on the video.
Also experiencing the very slow performance bug. Hope a solution on a next DVR version.

Just updated DR, and I'm exactly experiencing the same subtitles lagyness issue with the version 16.2.5
Playing my Timeline content is now a nightmare !
Just found something though, that can temporary help to fix the timeline lag issues when using subtitles.
After touching to any subtitles settings, just move your cursor on any video spreded on your time line.
Move any video length by dragging it's length back and forth, but drag it's length back to where it was.
And finally save your project.
At this step, don't touch any subtitles on your timeline.
Your timeline should now play smoothly without any lags.
On my system, it worked everytime so far.
Unfortunately, if you changed anything on any subtitles, DR will start to get lagy again, and you will need to redo the process.
Very annoying bug, but hope it can help.

This buffering the typing thing is driving me crazy. I've had to close and restart Davinci Resolve countless times now. I'm not even getting 10 subtitles done before I have to restart. I'm at 619 subtitles and I still have 20 minutes of this timeline left to transcribe.
Has anybody found a workaround?
I'm on version 16.2.5.015
2018 Mac Mini 3.2 GHz 6 Core i7
32 GB memory
MacOS 10.15.6

Same problem. Gets ridiculously slow. This is already a tedious and frustrating process. Definitely needs some attention.

This bug is happening to me since months ago, subtitles are unusable. I had to re install Adobe Premiere, so DVR is still not a serious replacement for Adobe.

Has this been resolved ?
I'm having horrible input lag when putting subtitles on a documentary. I have to re-launch Resolve every 2 minutes. The text input is lagging 3 seconds behind me typing the letters. It's driving me insane.
Why is this simple function so laggy ?

I had to downgrade to 16.2.3 to get subtitles to work as intended, without those lags.

It's a shame that this bug has not been solved on the latest DVR updates.
I guess BMD are aware, and perhaps they are teaching us the Art of the "patience".

I can confirm that version 16.2.3 is the last one where the subtitle editor works correctly.

Today is has been released DVR 16.2.7, and this bug continues UNSOLVED

Lag starts again after 25-30 subtitle boxes, and keeps incresing until DVR freezes in lag.
BMD: This is not child's play, but an unusable working tool in which many editors have trusted, malfunctioning since many updates, making us lose unjustifiable hours of work, and our patience.
I'm breathing and counting to 3 before go back to Adobe Premiere for several unfixed bugs, and inconsistency between GUI pages, already mentioned across this forum by many users.

16.2.7 is UNUSABLE for subtitles.
PERIOD!
BMD, I paid my license, I'm not a beta tester.
Please fix it on next update. I beg you.
No more new features until open beta features have reached its Final version.
Installing Adobe.

Hi there,
Same thing for me with subtitles...
I'll try using 16.2.3 see if it work better.
But saying that you will go back to Premiere because of that kind of bug is such a joke. Premiere Pro is FULL of bugs way more annoying... Not mentioning all the crashes for no reason.
"I paid my license, I'm not a beta tester" hmmm Resolve Studio is 269€ vs 69€/month for Adobe Creative Suite... Premiere Pro have unsolved bugs for years now, and they are still adding new useless features.
But that's just my point of view...

Ok I confirm, it works just fine in 16.2.3
It look like the subtitling tool didn't change between 16.2.3 and 16.2.7 so I don't really understand why it's not working properly in 16.2.7...
P.S : DVR subtitling tool is way better than the Premiere Pro one... Could even say better than some software made for subtitling!
P.P.S : I've been able to downgrade without any database issu (always do a back up just in case).

This is STILL a MAJOR issue. It's making me want to migrate my entire project out of Resolve into Premiere. Please FIX this surely simple memory bug ASAP.

Thanks!
Jason

This has to be a memory bug of some kind. I can confirm it's still there in the latest version 16.2.7. On smaller projects where I don't have to work with many subtitles it's not that big a deal but on feature films where there are hundreds of subtitles or more it's a complete nightmare.

I haven't had a crash yet, but subtitles are almost unusable even for short Youtube-style videos.

I can also confirm that downgrading from 16.2.7 to 16.2.3 solves the buggy subtitle behavior discussed in this thread.
Also, what kind of database are people using? I use a Postgresql database hosted on my Synology NAS. Wondering if this bug is specific to using remote Postgresql databases or not.
Has anyone tried doing subtitles in the DVR 17 beta? (Warning: DVR 17 requires a database update, so you may not be able to revert back to DVR 16 if you try the 17 beta, unless you back up your database before installing and running version 17.)

I was having the same issue here with 16.2.7.
I've backed up my database and updated to version 17 beta.
Now I'm on the 100th subtitle and its' running smooth.

thats so good to hear. 17 has been running crazy well for me so far, much smoother in general. Yet to do any subtitles but on my list of things to try out.
cheers

Same for me, no subtitle lag with DaVinci Resolve Studio 17 Public Beta 4.
Subtitle are running smoothly so far with all new projects, and with all tested projects done before in DR16.
Just hoping that we're there to remain on the right track about all past subtitles issues.

I am working with subtitles imported from a srt file at this very moment and even though I only have one video track of an already rendered video file, the playback is extremely choppy. when i disable the subtitle track, everything runs smoothly. what's going on?

Hello
I do not know the reason for slow or choppy subtitles as I am not suffering from this problem. However, I have a suggestion. Pop the subtitles on a separate timeline and export them as fcpxml 1.5. then bring them back in on a video track and see if the performance improves. You will lose the subtitling panel with Time in/out, Caption & cps but gain keyframes.
This is just a suggestion as I occasionally pull a subtitle into a video track to animate it.
Also, you can run a .srt file through SubSimple for free to get an fcxp xml 1.5
Hope you get some mileage out of that. Good Luck.
John
