What's the verdict on Radeon VII for Resolve?

PostMon Feb 24, 2020 10:19 pm

I'm thinking of upgrading my old Radeon R9's to a Radeon VII. I read a lot of mix reviews but the majority considers this card as good for content creation tools like NLEs, not much for gaming. Then there are the issues and concerns early on with drivers.

So I'm not planning on gaming. I have a dedicated Resolve workstation on which I will use this card.

So are the issues of drivers pretty much fix by now. For those of you who has been using the Radeon VII for Resolve, what is your verdict?

I'm not a video guy but got the card recently and had to solve driver issues. The solution seems to have been to make sure old drivers are all deleted thoroughly before installing new drivers - particularly if they're Nvidia drivers.

I used "DDU" to get rid of drivers and then installed AMD drivers and it was then fine. I think that's where a lot of the problems are coming from, lingering Nvidia drivers that make the system unstable.

we have 3 of them and are very happy with them (driver 19.2, don't fix, when it ain't broken).
Make sure you use pre-Navi drivers when you don't want to run into driver problems at the moment.
AMD is working hard on new stable drivers.
Still the fastest card on the market when it comes to workloads like TNR in Resolve.
16GB of VRAM which is enough for all 6k+ workflows.
And the price also helped.

Thanks. Now going to research more on which one fits the bill.

XFX is pretty cheap, try pcpartpicker.com, select your country and you get a good indication of the price.

Hi
I have had a Dual Radeon VII setup but gave up a few weeks back. Stability is a big issue. I ended up with a rtx 2080 super. I have kept the cards because when they run they are fast.

I have heard of this issue and strangely it is when setup as crossfire (dual) or some driver problem. Can you tell me how long ago was this? Did you get one of the earlier copies? Thanks.

The gaming drivers and pro drivers with dual GPUs runs almost anything else but resolve.
My setup is Msi creator trx40 3960x and my dream workstation was dual Radeon VII. A single card is much slower than the rtx 2080 super. As used 300$ it might be ok for short simple work. Any thing over 5 min is not stable.

As shown in this test by Slascam.de

With some workloads the $1.200 https://www.newegg.com/p/pl?N=100007709%204814%20601321492&Order=PRICE RTX2080ti is faster with other workloads the $700 Radeon VII(sold out in most areas) is faster.

If you plan to run DaVinci on Windows, use the old 19.11.3 drivers which are stable. Not the latest ones.

Here is no doubt that it is fast!. I have to 2, but stability keeps poping up as a massive issue. I have kept both cards hopping for a driver update to solve it. The latest rampage agains AMD drivers seems to have helped they just released a massive update solving many issues for the 5700. Hoping they affect more generaly to the Radeon VII also.

Sadly just ran with the latest driver 20.2.2. Sadly still a no go for me. Standard GoPro 4k60hz. Nr and retime. Full system freeze with and without hw decode/encode. Speed not so good rtx 2080 much faster and 100% stabel for my work load.

Do some serious TNR or other effects that run on the GPU with 4k source footage(or 6k footage which is also quite commen these days).

We use pre Navi drivers and they are fine with our workflow (DR, BRAW, AVC, R3D upto 7k).

Fast :-) and seem stable the rtx was 32min and this seem to be close to 22 min. Primary card from 98 down to 26 % load and the othe is 18-20% load. This is a project on a RAM disk rendered to a RAM disk.

I have seen both cards at 100% when I multigpu was on. But couldn’t find the option on this driver.

RamDisk(~ 0.1 TB/s) makes no difference and is super slow compared to the 1 TByte/sec of the Radeon VII 16 GB of VRAM and with RamDisk you still have the PCIe max. bandwidth of only ~ 0.016 TB/s with other than NAVI cards.

Resolve didn’t care whether multi gpu was on or off in the 19.11.3 driver. This was a sure crash in the 20.x drivers. Debayer and compression didn’t seem to make any difference. Hw decode h.265 only uses one GPU for rendering and only the first 1 1/2 min . Encoding is not used using h.265.
The BR studio 16 settings for the 19.11.3 .

Blender 2.82 was at 4K Bmw benchmark in 9:32 min. Using both. Almost the Same as 20.2.2

So for dual Radeon VII thise seem ok.

Spec workstation benchmark with this driver the single rtx 2080 super is faster in most except luxrende where the Radeons are 3 times faster.

Last update in this thread for me. Sadly I can’t get the Benifits from updated drivers for resolve and other software packages.
Drivers must be updated to support latest features, security and fixes and using really old drivers is just :-(

Respond for editing very well also for fusion and export I use 4k files at 150mp sec from gh5.

Issue with Black screen after boot. And a full benchmark of spec workstation and pugetsystem resolve bench. RTX 2080 wins all my applications. 8gb card is enough for Nvidia but the radeons vii seem to need more for the same task. Had a fusion transform which ran 10,5 GB but the RTX 2080 super was fine.
I might post the result files later.

Re: What's the verdict on Radeon VII for Resolve?

PostThu Apr 16, 2020 4:52 am

I just rolled back my drivers from the latest Radeon 20.4.1 to 19.11.3... Holy cow! The difference is huge in Resolve.

My Radeon VII is rendering stable again. Yeah!

Thanks guys!

Hi, so, I'm back to looking at this card and it looks like from your post and the latest one in this thread, that older drivers work fine with Resolve and BRAW? Just checking back if that's the case?

Just for those that have problems:

My impression is that a lot of the problems are caused by lingering driver/hardware-related software, so what often solves the problem is getting rid of all of that before installing AMD's driver/software package. I think "DDU" run in Windows safe mode does the trick often.

Also, I read at least one user had a great experience using AMD's "pro" driver package instead of the 'regular' Radeon stuff. I'm not sure it's officially supported, but since it's the same architecture (?) as their pro compute cards it makes sense it works, and I think I've even read that somewhere (that they acknowledged that it works but isn't 'officially supported' or whatever)....

Having to rely on older driver version is just not a good approach. It's like a workaround. There's got to be a definitive fix either from AMD or BMD, more likely with BMD probably.

Some say that the display driver for the monitor can cause a freeze. So remember driver for GPU and for monitor is importent in finding a stable combo. I gave up getting two Radeon VII to run in windows as i needed a 4 hour 100% stabel render. I have both ready for when stability arrives in windows as they work so grate under linux and MacOS it seems. Mabe a Mac Pro with Dual radeon vii :-)

I have a workstation with 1 Radeon VII and another one with 2 Radeon VII, both are going very well with 19.11.3 drivers. I also have a workstation with a RTX 2080 Super and another one with 2 RTX 2080 Ti.

Under Win10 the Radeon VII gives results very similar to RTX 2080 Super, they are in the same price league, but the big difference is that you can run MacOs on Radeon...

With DaVinci Resolve I prefer 2 Radeon VII than a single RTX 2080 Ti.

2x GeForce RTX 2080 Ti

For the time being, IMHO yes. Until there are better drivers by AMD or newer cards by Nvidia.

yes, but i would keep the cards. 16 GB frame buffer is not cheap.

Even 1 Radeon VII is a better choice for 6k+ source material (11 GB is often not enough and you'll get the notorious out of memory error).

I'm looking at the 2 popular Radeon VII cards - the XFX and the ASROCK. Both products, side by side comparison has the same price and exactly the same spec except for the max supported resolution. The XFX supports 4K and the ASROCK supports 8K. Is this just marketing hype or is there validity to the difference?

They are the same reference model (the only one available to the public).

Here is a link to the discussion of Radeon VII driver problems on the AMD user forum.

https://community.amd.com/thread/246886

Even though Pugetsound benchmarks indicate the Radeon VII as a good choice for Davinci/Fusion, nevertheless, this AMD thread about driver problems deterred me from considering the Radeon VII.

The user comments on Newegg are, in my view, not stellar in terms of user problems and cards going wrong.

The RTX 5000 is a 16GB-VRAM alternative and it's only $2,300 at Newegg https://www.newegg.com/pny-vcqrtx5000-pb/p/N82E16814133767?Description=rtx%205000&cm_re=rtx_5000-_-14-133-767-_-Product

Ok, I'll try this again:

- Make sure ALL previous drivers are deleted from the system BEFORE installing AMD drivers. Use DDU.

- There's also a "pro" driver by AMD that some have used to get stability.

I and many others have zero problems.

It may be too much to ask but if you can write out the step by step process you took to clear all previous drivers and what you suggested doing able so that others having issues or anticipating of getting the R7, it will be a tremendous help for readers here.

I will make a test of dual Radeon VII in the next few days with the latest drivers. I just run the puget systems ones.

It was a couple of months ago now (time seems like just one big blur ever since I got 'stuck' at home because of the virus.... what day is it again???) so my memory is a bit fuzzy, but basically I just installed the software "DDU" (Display Driver Uninstaller) and ran that. I believe I ran it first 'normally' which didn't help, and then as recommended after booting into Windows "safe mode". I think I may have done that twice actually.

I previously had an Nvidia card, so I also made sure to uninstall everything I could find the regular way before running DDU.

After the above I ran the installer from AMD. I'm not using the pro version but 20.1.3 from 1/17/2020. My impression is that those who have issues don't really seem to have issues with any particular driver version or that those that don't have issues are on a specific version. Instead the only thing I've seen that's been fairly consistent is that people with a stable system either "lucked out" or they ran DDU first. Even reviewers of other general Radeon cards have reported the same type of issues, usually "black screens" etc, and have found no stability problems after thoroughly uninstalling previous drivers using DDU.

I know I should have written down exactly how I went about installing this card successfully, but unfortunately I didn't. Sorry I can't be more specific and helpful, but I just wanted to say that those who have this card and have 'black screen' issues may have simply overlooked or failed to properly get rid of previous drivers and that the card can work just fine in many cases.
