HELP! Accidental Deletion!!!!

PostTue Aug 06, 2013 9:45 pm

HELP REQUESTED! Resolve 9.1.5 on my Mac created a duplicate hard drive folder in the library section of the software - adding the number 1 to the name of my media drive. My media drive is entitled "Hard Drive" - but looked up and saw "Hard Drive" - AND - "Hard Drive 1".

I don't have a drive entitled 'Hard Drive 1"!

Thinking this was a software glitch - I deleted "Hard Drive 1". The software prompted me to confirm deletion and I proceeded.

BUT - in doing so I unintentionally erased 6TB of newly shot Sony RAW footage!

IS THIS FOR REAL?

Resolve created a new folder AND associated ALL of my media with it - without ANY input from me? How could this happen? More importantly - how can I get my files back - if at all?

Data Rescue 3 (the data recovery software) - actually sees the missing MXF files - but cannot recover them. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to recover the files? Any word would be appreciated. Kindly advise.

AND TO BLACKMAGIC...
Can anyone explain what happened with the Hard Drive 1 thing? This is not a good thing! At all!

Our Fingers are Crossed!

Much appreciated in advance!

Hi Rob, sorry to here of your problem. I tested the workflow you described and could not replicate your problem. It's hard to imagine Resolve moving files out of one folder on the drive and into another as we only move files with the file manager tool and not via file or folder drag and drop. Creating a new folder always makes an empty folder too.

Certainly for that size of raw data, a third party file recovery tool sounds like your best hope.
Good luck.

Do not touch or use that drive. **
Speak with a drive recovery specialist. Canada there is.

Maybe file scavanger.
How important is the media, that's what you will have to way up.

Just some thoughts
Radman.

Ps: it's called the "Defence of the Realm." mmm, what's all this about?

Thank you Peter - Radman... Much appreciated.

I NOW KNOW PRECISELY HOW THE DOUBLED FOLDER THING OCCURRED.

1. Using my MacBook Pro - the drive I had was connected via a pcmcia eSATA adapter from Sonnet.
2. That adapter was accidentally pressed in - which disconnected the drive - but then it was immediately replaced.
3. THIS CREATED THE EXTRA NAMED FOLDER - AND - ASSOCIATED ALL OF THE MEDIA WITH IT (AS OPPOSED TO THE ORIGINAL DRIVE)

4. The rest is history.

PLEASE ADVISE!!!! This footage was shot via helicopter in Hawaii. To recreate it would literally be impossible.

Thank you for your consideration.

If it is that critical do not touch it further. Get it to a Pro.
I gave you a reputable company but some where closer to you I can not help.
Try Able-Cine I think they call themselves. They I am sure can forward you to the right people.
Good Luck, not a nice spot to be in. Radman.

Hi, I'm based in Singapore so don't have any contacts in NY.
Maybe you could start. New thread, "does anyone know a professional drive/file recovery service in NY?"

Thank you Peter. Radman. I am in contact with Abelcine and Tekserve. I think I may be headed in the right direction. All the best to you both! Rob

I had this happen to me once too, luckily I did not delete!
I think what fixed it was I removed the drive from my cache disk list and restarted and then re added.
FWIW....

On another note, I recently removed my main raid and added a larger one. All projects including new ones still have the removed raid listed in the drive library list. It seems it was still listed in the default project cache location, so I had to manually type in path of new one. Sort of sucks.

Thanks for your insights friend. I think BlackMagic should take a look into creating an update that'll stop the software from creating a second drive with an appended number if the drive is somehow disconnected then reconnected. For a new user like me it both confused me - and of course contributed to the loss of over a months worth of work! PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF THIS BLACKMAGIC. Again... after accidentally disconnecting - then reconnecting a hard drive that was connected via a Sonnet PCMCIA eSATA adapter the full version of Davinci Resolve 9.1.5 on a Mac created an additional hard drive folder with the same name - with the addition of the number 1 appended to the name. DAVINCI ALSO ASSOCIATED ALL OF THE MEDIA FILES WITH THIS NEWLY CREATED DRIVE. Upon deletion of this second drive all of my files were permanently erased! NOT COOL!

I now know better!

It is my hope that my loss can help improve the software for all else who find themselves faced with this situation. Data loss and recovery (if possible) is a costly undertaking - in time and treasure!

All the best guys! Peace.

Yeah well... Try this
http://www.prosofteng.com/recovery_101/
Since your drive is not damaged it should be no problem to recover
Your file names will likely all be gone though
Your exact issue happened to a friend of mine last week
Luckily he had a clone drive, but because it
Was all r3d resolve would not relink. It's funny that way...

This happened to me today.

Thought I was deleting a duplicated reference to my 6TB working RAID that ended in "1".

Within 15 seconds Resolve deleted 3TB of material without as much as a warning.

PLEASE fix this. Since it was a media RAID, everything is/was duplicated elsewhere except for my archives of finished work. Since most of that was in .mov form, I am hopeful that Data Rescue 3 can get back my finished finals at least.

Again, Resolve team, PLEASE fix this. I am no dummy and have been working with Resolve since 7.0, it's beyond belief that Resolve could blow away the root of a drive so quickly and easily without warning.

Is this a joke. I had the same problem IT DELETED EVERYTHING! My protools files my premiere project. Whiped out the harddrive. I'm affraid we have a huge bug here. I'm using platform number 12.

Never ever in my 8 year experience as filmmaker has a software failed me so big. I had the same problem. I rendered out my project, let it stay over night cause it took more than 5 hours to render.
It autosaved the project I asume and the disk got ejected somehow.

Anyways, Disk is fine I'm working on premiere, replacing the original with the new graded exports from davinci. After getting feedback I go back to davinci. Realizing that all the files were missing, I see that it has created a new file directory "Myhardrive name" with a added number 1

Original file name in finder: Volumes/Myhardrive
Davincis version of my vol: Volumes/Myhardrive 1

I assumed it was a proxy file for the location so I deleted it to add the right volume name. Wow without a warning and time. All my drive got whiped.

This is awful and I'm gonna spread the word if this is not fixed inmedadly. This destroyed my whole deadline and I'm not sure if I can recover the whole thing. I have the source ofcourse recovered on another drive.
But all my month work on this project is gone thanks to Davincis stupid software engineering
This is a disaster Blackmagic I hope you fix this

I hope you can recover your content with a drive repair or a backup.

FYI, the situation occurs when your external drive looses connection to the computer temporarily. The OS then reports to Resolve that a new drive has been added and it was called "My hard drive 1" and so it was added to the Media Storage list automatically as a part of the normal "auto find storage" feature.

To avoid the potential of deleting this drive and contents accidentally we removed the delete option for the drive in v12.5.

@All,

For drive recovery, (I do data recovery myself for clients) one of the most powerfull I've ever used, and still use to this day, is Testdisk and PhotoRec, depending on what you need to recover. (It does partition and bootsector recovery as well)

I have recovered files from badly damaged hard drives / thump drives and SD cards in the past, which no other recovery program could even read initially. Its working on low level and does raw recovery as well of which ever file sytem you throw at, even if the OS does not see the drive, this does.

It's coded by a French Security expert Christophe Grenier, and is published under GNU, that is, its free, and from the past 10 years using it, my opinion is that its more powerfull than 1xxx USD recovery programs. Nothing beats it.

I came to this topic looking for the answer to my question - is that a bug or that is the feature of Resolve, that I could delete original material from the drive from video editing software.

I was working a little with the premier and now try to do so with resovle. I was sure that original media is untouchable for any editing software. But I just found that after deleting JPG images from the media pool I found them missing at the drive. To my luck, it was qnap raid and the network bin was on so I found my files deleted in the bin.

I already had a project with some original media red (not located). When I tried to locate them I have found that the media is missing. I was playing a lot with setting up Postgres so i moved projects from db to db maybe times. At that moment I decided that probably somehow deleted it myself by mistake. Now I tend to think that there is a way to delete original media on the disk somehow deleting it from the medial library in Resolve.

Please advise what moves must be avoided in the media pool/library of Resolve or if any bugs/unlucky combinations of moves exist?
