resolve 16.2 not starting after a crash

PostTue Mar 24, 2020 4:52 pm

After a crash because of a lack of disk space on my pc, resolve 16.2 crashed and didn't start afterwards, showing to boot for a few seconds and then stops.

after that, i tried to install 15.3.1 and that turned on succesfully, but then i tried re-installing 16.2 and it still didn't work.

i tried uninstalling and deleting all related documents and files multiple times to no effect.

Assuming by "pc" you mean a Windows PC, send us a Resolve log file.

In a File Explorer window, go to:

C:\Program Files\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve

and run CaptureLogs

This will place a Resolve log file named similar to this on your Windows desktop: DaVinci-Resolve-logs-20181228_140434.zip (You may not see the .zip extension if your system is set to hide known extensions).

Do this after reinstalling Resolve 16.2 and attempting to launch it.

Frequently the Resolve process is still running even after the GUI disappears. You have to kill it in Task Manager before relaunching Resolve.

I have experienced this several times also. I am on Windows 10. I know my hardware is way underpowered (see on my description) and that might be part of the problem so not just saying it is Resolve fault. Need to update my system as soon as possible.

I have found out that some times when Resolve crashes I have to open Windows Task Manager and force shutdown Resolve as it some cases will hang there even after the software is crashed and disappeared from my screen and from the open programs list. Without doing it Resolve won't start again but after that, I can re-open Resolve.

The .zip weighs over 500MB, how should i send it to you?

Thank you to those who commented! i did try to close the app from task manager a few times but strangley enough, it disappeard by itself after a few seconds and resolve still didn't operate.

Put the zip file on a file sharing site and provide a link here to the file.

If you are a new user, and the system won't let you post a URL, put a space in it near the front, so the system doesn't see it as a URL.

In this folder:

C:\Users\USER\AppData\Roaming\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve\Preferences

Replace config.dat with a COPY of config.dat.bak

Make sure you don't lose the config.dat.bak file itself.

Then launch Resolve. If it still fails to launch, send another log.

Lots of ways. But I'd recommend renaming config.dat to config.dat.bad, then make a copy of config.dat.bak and rename that copy config.dat

The config.dat file has some key information in it that Resolve needs at startup.

In rare situations, that file might get corrupted in a Resolve crash.

If that happens, Resolve can't launch.

Fortunately, we make a backup of the file, called config.dat.bak

As long as that file doesn't also get corrupted, it can be used to replace a corrupt config.dat file.

This worked for me and I'm so happy. I've been stressing out all day. Resolve wouldn't even attempt to load for me. I would see it in the task manager and it would just die.

Uninstalled and reinstalled MULTIPLE times. Downgraded. Still didn't work.

THIS WORKED. Thank you so much

I have the same issue. I have BM Studio, running the current version 16.2.6. I tried doing as you stipulated, and it actually opened up, but it froze completely once in the project. My mac freezes and I have to reboot the mac. Here are my log files https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... sp=sharing
Any help would be greatly appreciated and please let me know if you need more details.

Assuming you are on Windows:

In a File Explorer window, go to:

C:\Program Files\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve

and run CaptureLogs

This will place a Resolve log file named similar to this on your Windows desktop: DaVinci-Resolve-logs-20181228_140434.zip (You may not see the .zip extension if your system is set to hide known extensions).

Then open Windows System Information and do a File - Save (Not a File Export), which will generate a .NFO file.

Place both those files on a file sharing site and provide links to the files here.

If you are a new Forum user, you may not be allowed to post URLs. If this happens, just put a space near the front of the URL, so the system doesn't think it's a URL.

@Jennifer: Try updating the AMD graphics driver for the RX 5700XT GPU. When you update the driver, select the Clean install option.

If that doesn't help, send another Resolve log after updating the driver, and also send a Windows System Information .NFO file. Open the System Information app and do a File - Save to create the .NFO file.

Dwaine, I installed the drivers but I am still unable to open the program. Would really like to get this fixed thanks for the help. Here is a link to my Windows System Information.NFO file. I have attached a new log file.

I could not add the entire link so here it is without the www in front of if.

You have a desktop computer and motherboard, with an AMD RX5700XT GPU installed.

Yet, your NFO file shows you have 2 displays connected to the system via 2 DisplayLink USB Devices.

Please connect displays only directly to the GPU itself. What are the DisplayLink devices your 2 displays are currently connected to, and why are you using those?

I have two monitors hooked up to a Display link plug and play docking station and one USB going to my computer. so I can use two monitors. It always worked before I upgraded.

I tried plugging one of the monitors directly into the computer and it worked. Do you know of any way I can get this to work with my docking station? I looked up the drivers for the docking station but they are up-to-date. All other software works when I have the docking station setup.

This is my docking station: Plugable USB 3.0 Universal Laptop Docking Station Dual Monitor for Windows and Mac (Dual Video: HDMI and DVI/VGA/HDMI, Gigabit Ethernet, Audio, 6 USB Ports)

THanks for your help!

I don't know of a way to make Resolve happy with the docking station.

I'm not saying there isn't a way, but I don't know of a way. Your GPU has multiple outputs. Is there some reason you can't connect both displays directly to the GPU card?

I use the same keyboard and monitors for my laptop and use the desktop mostly for editing and other things. This way I can swap them out. I also just tried leaving the keyboard and mouse plugged into the docking station and just plugging in the monitor directly to the desktop and that did not work either. It is a major bummer that this does not work. So weird because the same setup worked on the older version.
