Media Management - 16.2 Bug

PostTue Mar 24, 2020 6:26 pm

hi,

On Windows, In media management, copy clips don't work with ''Copy and trim used media keeping -- frame handles''.
It's just copying the entire clip with no trim for SONY RAW MXF.

And Relink to new files is disable !

Thx

Resolve can't write RAW files. No choice but to copy in entirety.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Contrary to what Jim so authoritatively claims, Resolve can write camera raw files, as long as the format supports lossless trim, such as R3Ds.

That said, I think lossless trim is codec dependent, and not container dependent. I trim MXF sources all the time, but almost all the MXF files I usually do with this are either ProRes or AVC/XAVC.

The “Relink to Files” thing is a long-standing (and really annoying) bug/feature-oversight. Usually this happens if you have multiple timelines containing the clips that you want to trim in your project. My workaround has always been to copy all the timelines into a single “source trim” timeline, then delete all the other timelines before invoking the Media Management panel, whereupon the “Relink to Files” option should work again.

Hey Mel - old post but still relevant. I'm trying to copy and trim XAVC clips (without handles) using Media Management, and not able to get that to work in the free version Resolve 16.2.8. I've also tried it in the free version of DR17 - no luck. However, I can copy/trim (without transcoding) H264 and a few other file types, but not XAVC-Intra MXF files from an FS7 or F5.

It's interesting to hear you've been able to do this successfully. Are you aware if trimming of XAVC files though Media Management is only available through Resolve Studio?

Even in the Studio version not all codecs get trimmed. It's a case by case thing. If you post a sample, I can try.

And, yes, BRAW or R3D get trimmed.
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.

As far as I know, the free version does not prevent you from trimming source media. I do know that it does place a limit on export resolutions though. You can't export anything at higher than UHD resolutions using the free version. I'm just speculating, because I haven't tested it, but perhaps this limitation also applies to media manager source trimming as well?

I just trimmed an XF-AVC (from C300 mkIII) based project today (intraframe), and it worked fine in Resolve Studio 16.

Thanks Uli and Mel --

I did some testing in free version DR16.2.8 and found some interesting results -- which appear to point to Sony codecs to some degree with a twist.

When selecting the active timeline and attempting to copy + trim with 0 frame handles using Media Management under the Timeline tab:

- XAVC-I MXF (1080) only copies whole clips
- I rewrapped the above XAVC-I clip to .MOV from MXF in an external program (Tentacle Sync Studio), and copy+trim worked beautifully (odd)
- H.264 .MOV files copy+trim just fine
- H264 MP4 files copy+trim just fine
- XDCAM 50 MXF clips from C300 mark 1 are not even recognized if selecting "copy" or "copy and trim" under Timeline tab, but will come over if copying all clips project

I'm sure the results will be the same in DR17 free version.

This leads me to believe that the paid version is necessary for copy+trim (AKA consolidate in Avid) of XAVC MXF files. I believe XAVC is not officially supported in the free version, and may just be working because I've installed Sony's Apple plugins on my machine (8-core i9 MBP).

This is all a work around due to Premiere's inability to consolidate and trim without a transcode. DR Studio it will probably pay for itself quickly with savings in time and image integrity.

Wow, thanks for figuring this out!

I had the same issue today, unsuccessfully trying to trim XAVC Intra MXF files in Resolve 16.2.7, and it just copied the entire file instead.

After reading the results of your tests, I tried rewrapping the MXF files into MOV containers using EditReady, and Resolve was able to trim them just fine!

Shutter Encoder can do the re-wrapping too.
