[Need Help] Glitch Frames In Render (16.2) - Video Included

PostThu Apr 02, 2020 9:32 pm

Hey guys,

So I have been using resolve 16.2 for sometime and I have been facing this weird glitchy frame where I am getting this some pixelated blocks from the previous frames every time there is an abrupt change in the video render like in this video :

Link -

So far I have only encountered this when rendering in mp4 or Quicktime MOV using H.264. However, when I tried using Cineform 10 bit as the codec this problem went away and the playback was just fine.

Also, the timeline playback on resolve project doesn't seem to show any problems. And this is just the render which has the problems. When I imported the Rendered video file back to resolve and I didn't see the glitch frames when played back in the timeline but whenever I play on VLC, Windows media player or even on YouTube the problem seems to come back.

My PC specs -

(The graphics card driver is up to date)

Any help is greatly appreciated! _/\_

Okay there has been a development with this issue, I did some more tests on this and I tried removing the color correction from that section in the project and it seems like the glitch is gone in the render. However it came back as soon as I added the color correction to the video again. It seems like the issue has to do with the color tab. I also did a test by removing the GPU scopes and tried to render but the glitch was there whenever I rendered it with the color correction irrespective of the GPU preferences. I believe there is some problem with the color section in resolve 16.2 as I had encountered yet another issue with the color tab this week which you can check here -

My project's upload is now stuck because of this issue. It would be really helpful if there is some resolution to this. Thank you for your time!

I think i found a solution.

I've been having the same problems for a couple of months now. Every time i render a H.264 mp4 it glitches at the end logo. It started to piss me off. So I read your question and i think i found a way to fix it.

In your renders settings put your data levels to Auto. And change your Color Space Tag from same as project to the desired color space and do the same for Gamma Tag. (I use Rec.709)

So far it's been pretty constant without any glitches on the last 12 H.264 mp4 renders.

Hopefully this will help.

Cheers.

Upload that version. YouTube can handle it and the results actually come out better than an H.264 upload.

Rendering h264, especially higher frame rates, and if your source material is also h264, can be CPU intensive. You could try rendering at a lower speed.

If that produces any change in the output, it's a bug that needs squashing.

I don't think this issue is necessarily due to rendering to H.264. I've read comments advocating turning on "force debayer to highest quality", "force sizing to highest quality", turning off "network optimization", changing the render color space to something different than the project's color space, setting the timeline resolution to match the render resolution, and more. For the project I'm currently working on none of this helps. I've read you shouldn't render to H.264 because it specifically has issues, and that rendering to DNx or anything else should work. However I'm seeing just as many glitches with other codecs.

So far the only thing that helps is lowering the render speed, but it's still not eliminating all glitches, and it makes rendering take forever (slowing down not only the complex layered parts, but even pure black and credits).

Could it be that Resolve has bugs rendering out footage that is H.264 in the timeline, no matter what it's rendered too? Seems like this could be the problem. Very frustrating...

EOY Update:

I have been getting the same issue even now in Resolve 16.2.2. I am still not entirely sure why this issue exists or how to fix this.

The glitch is very unpredictable and can show itself at any random edit. The only thing that I've found to be constant and that is the fact that it usually happens when sudden changes are made within the video which shouldn't really occur since this is a very resolve specific issue and other workstations seem to not have this glitch.

I've tried to eradicate this up-to some extent with the help of an image layer on top(with suitable composite mode and opacity) - Like these ones

This is done as an effort to force Davinci Resolve to put more bits into rendering those frames where the issue shows itself. Although it is not perfect and isn't a clean way to go about it. It works sometimes and sometimes it doesn't (until I make it somehow as mentioned above)

I have also tried out rendering it at various speeds(fast and slow) and the issue with the glitch frame still persists. Hope there is a fix to this. Any suggestions are welcome and appreciated!

I haven't tested this theory yet, but I remember reading somewhere that Resolve doesn't always play nicely with AMD graphics cards. I realized that I started noticing this issue sometime after replacing my Nvidia card with an AMD card. Has anyone had this issue with an Nvidia card?

I'm planning to test this by rendering using CPU only.

What helps is: set the keyframes at the render menu to "every 1 frames" instead of "automatically"

I've just been troubleshooting this issue in Resolve 17.4.6 and I discovered that changing the Encoder from Native to Nvdia solved the problem. Hope it helps anyone who stumbles upon this thread.
