Resolve not recognizing Grading Monitor

Hello,

I recently upgraded to a new iMac, Catalina 10.15.4. I'm using Resolve 15.3.1 Studio.
When I go to Preferences, Resolve doesn't recognize my grading monitor (Eizo).
On my old Mac I used an Ultra studio Mini Monitor, but with USB-C, I can bypass that and connect directly.
Is this the problem?
Would be a shame as the monitor has a max resolution of 2560x1440, whereas Mini Monitor is limited to 1080p.

Any help would be appreciated.

For proper grading, you should be connecting to a dedicated I/O device, not your GPU. BMD does make devices that can handle 4k.

I've connected a new iMac to my UltraStudio Mini Monitor i/o device and it's connected to my Eizo grading monitor, but still Resolve is not recognizing the monitor.

On my old iMac, I recall selecting the monitor in Preferences>System>Video i/o - is that correct?
Right now Captue and Playback and Resolve Live both show - None.
Yikes - is there some step I'm missing, or is this connection made in another menu?

Make sure the current version of Desktop Video is installed. Run Blackmagic Media Express, and if it detects a display has been connected to your Blackmagic device, it should automatically find it. Load in any compatible file and it should play the video just fine. Once that works, quit Media Express and launch Resolve, then go into the Prefs and setup the I/O Devices and it should be there. Highlight that device, and then relaunch Resolve and you should be good to go.

The rule of thumb is, if Media Express can't see it, Resolve never will, so that's the place to start when you troubleshoot these devices. And you really do need a color-managed output and a calibrated display to get accurate color with Resolve.

Hi Marc, thanks so much for responding.
So after updating Desktop Video, Resolve now recognizes my UltraStudio Mini Monitor. I clicked that button and restarted. Still no image showing up on my grading monitor. Yes, I took your advice a while ago and have an Eizo Self Calibrating Monitor. Thanks for that.

Unfortunately Media Express doesn't seem to find my monitor as there's no image.
I changed out the HDMI cable just to be sure that wasn't the problem - still no go.

So signal is getting to my i/o device but not through to the monitor.
I called Eizo, after running through a couple of tests, she said that my computer and the Eizo monitor are communicating fine.

I have no idea at this point.

Again, any ideas are very welcome.

Let's try to get to the bottom of this. While I'm still under Mojave, my Mini Monitor works flawlessly with my 2017 iMac. If you write "Unfortunately Media Express doesn't seem to find my monitor as there's no image." let's check. Do you see the Mini Monitor if you open the device menu in Media Express?

If so, it should be working. Actually, Media Express needs to be installed, but not even running.

Now in Resolve, you should see this:

Finally, you'll need to set the output format in Resolve, which needs to have settings that your monitor does support (they can be different from your timeline):

You may need to experiment here, like trying progressive or interlaced.

Ok I'll try to post screenshots as you've done. If I fail to get the screenshots embedded, the quick answer is

1. Yes - in Media Express, my UltraStudio Mini Monitor showed up under the Device tab just as it does in yours.

2. Yes - my UltraStudio Mini Monitor shows up and is selected in Resolve Preferences/Video and Audio I/O

3. Yes - In Project Settings/Master Settings under Video Monitoring: HD 1080p 24 is selected under Video format.

I looked around but couldn't find where to select 'progressive or interlaced'. Could you let me know where to find that?

So far with all of the above, I still have no image on my Eizo monitor.

I'm going to hook everything up to ,my old iMac in the morning. That will tell me if the UltraStudio Mini Monitor is defective.

Quick question Uli - my Mini Monitor gets very hot after an hour or so - does yours? Just wondering.

OK I just figured it out...
For some reason my Eizo monitor needs to be turned on before I turn on my iMac.
If I turn on the iMac first, they just don't hook up.
Anyway all good. Happy camper.

Yes, HDMI handshaking can be very finicky, it was not really made for a professional environment, but first of all for content protection…

My Mini Monitor is getting pretty hot too. But never failed me, even in a hot room – seems normal.

Hey, I'm not sure if this is the place, but I couldn't find any better...

My Ultra Studio Mini Monitor was working perfectly in Resolve 16, but isn't recognized in 17. Running the latest (I think) everything. Any ideas what it could be?
