Speed effects (Cut page) - issue

PostWed May 06, 2020 5:53 pm

Hi,

I have a problem with the speed tool on the tools of the viewer tools in the cut page.

I don't see the easing buttons and the optical flow. The duration value is cropped.

The other tools work fine.

Hi Kyteler,

I'm curious whether you found a solution or know more of this issue: I have exactly the same.

This is what I see.

I have exactly the same problem.
I use paid version - DaVinci Resolve Studio 16. Version 16.2.8.005.

Blackmagic manuals and training do show effect control buttons. But they are missing from software.
I can only see Speed and Duration buttons for speed controls on cut page. The controls look identical as a snapshot provided by stafmans above.

Is this a software bug?

No problem in 17.0b6. Everything displays correctly. As I never used the Cut page in vers 16 I cannot tell you what it looked like.

If you have other boxes that display the same way, check that your monitor(s) are set to their native resolution.

Charles,

You say that your Cut Page in DaVinci Resolve 17 displays correctly, yet you pasted the view where controls are missing. It seems that, in your case, it is identical to what I see.

Here is how it should look like (this is a picture from DaVinci Resolve manual). I circled missing controls in red.

Make sure Display Scaling is set to 100%.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

My display is 4K and I keep it at 175% for ease of use.

I did change display scaling to 100%. This had just cosmetic effect on DaVinci Resolve since application is smart enough to adjust properly to 4K displays without requiring Windows system scaling overrides.

Even if I forced DaVinci to accept systems settings (100% scaling via DPI system scaling overrides) nothing changed except that all controls became way too small.

In other words - no luck. The missing buttons are not because of wrong scaling.

As a matter of fact the same "easing" buttons are available in Dynamic Zoom section just right of Speed Controls, yet missing for Speed Controls.

See snapshot below.

I too am having the same problem. DR 16.2.7.01 on MBP.

I was trying to solve another problem I have posted about (frame interpolation) with no replies and was going to thread bump after having another go at forum searches and key word searching the manual.

In a different section discussing the cut panel and the "tools button" to bring up "Clip Effects", it mentioned additional effect controls under "speed effects" that don't seem to be available on the Edit page via Retime controls on the clip or Retime and Scaling under the Inspector.

I went to find those additional controls and low and behold, they are cut off. Tried playing around with display settings, workspace, view. etc. and could find no way to fix it. Back to the forum to search on this problem....

Bingo. Thankfully I found it quick and I'm not the only one...

After reading your post, I checked all the other effect tool controls and they match the manual. Only Speed Effects tools are cut off.

And just like your pic, mine is cut off at 00:00:35 where part of the five is cut off. What is interesting is the other posters screen capture isn't cutoff at the same point, but is also missing the additional controls.

Looks to be a bug to me unless someone has figured out some setting somewhere is off.

Yes - looks like a bug introduced in one of the early versions of DaVinci Resolve 16.
I wonder if there is anybody on this forum who could confirm it works for them. And if it does, on what version of Resolve.

I sent an e-mail to Blackmagic support. Waiting for an answer. I will post their answer when/if I receive one.

I was going to do the same, but I discovered there is a 16.2.8 update for DR. While the release notes don't mention this issue, I figured I would wait and see after updating before I emailed.

I checked my backup status before installing and I discovered my automatic backups had inadvertently stopped, so I am going to update tomorrow after I run the backup tonight since it's been a few weeks and the backup size is large. That way I can revert easily if there is an issue in the update.

I'll let you know if the update fixes the issue. I am new, so my posts have to be approved by moderators currently. There may be a delay from submitting to posting for my results tomorrow.

Cheers,
Matt

I have DaVinci Resolve Studio 16.2.8. The issue is there.
Charles, in the post above, has shown that it also exists in DaVinci Resolve 17 beta.

No response from Balckmagic support yet.

Well, that stinks. I figured it was a long shot.

I want to get at the ghosting/optical flow features to see if it solves an artifact issue I am having with frame interpolation.

I think the Optical Flow has the same functions that can be accessed via the clip/project settings, but the Ghosting can only be found in this area as far as I can tell.

Cheers,

Matt,

I think that Ghosting effect in Cut Page (the one which should be there but is not) is the same or similar to Frame Blending mode which you can choose on Edit page in Inspector under Retime Process.

Manual seem to suggest that through there description.

I kind of thought the same thing, but figured there might be something else to it since it had it's "own" name.

I could never overcome either "jerky movement" with nearest/frame blend or artifacts with optical flow. I went low tech and moved my title text to the top of the frame and then timed it with the appearance of the artifacts right at the end of the clip.

Thanks for the tip!
