How To Open Second Viewer (Source / Media Viewer )

PostThu May 21, 2020 2:31 am

I must be having a brain cramp....

How do I open the "second" viewer on the SAME monitor that my workspace / timeline viewer is on? (I only have one physical monitor). Using 16.2.1.017

I must have changed a setting somewhere.

Before, if I was on the Edit page and I double click on a clip in the media pool, that clip would open up in a separate viewer next to the viewer for the timeline.

Now if I double click on a clip in the media pool (while on the edit page), it just "replaces" the image instead of the timeline.

By the way: In the Menu -> Workspace -> Single Viewer Mode is "checked" but is also grayed out, so I can't UN-check Single Viewer Mode. Is that part of the problem???

Thanks in advance.

Toggle off the Inspector and click the button in the corner. If that doesn't work, try Workspace>Reset UI Layout.

Have you gone through the training offered by BMD? The books/lessons are a great way to learn the software.

I am sure they are.

I have gone through some of the videos posted by black magic on youtube. (I think they were created when version 15 was launched). They have been helpful.

I also try to reference the manual when I can.

Thanks for the link and I will look through those when i have more time. I am surprisingly busy with work right now (which I consider a blessing, no complaints from me).

Editor's choice ultimately, but...if I'm working with a new camera, I'm going to learn how to use it well before I use it on a job.

I'm having the same problem but I don't know which "button" in the corner being referenced.

Could you please possible supply a graphic with an arrow pointing to the correct arrow?

There are so many little buttons on screen.

I did exit out of Inspector and chose Workplace and Reset UI and it did create a 2nd screen but the vi doe that's on the right screen doesn't appear in the left screen, it's just dark. Must I drag that video from the Media Pool?

My goal is to crop a video.

The tutorial video instructs you to grab the "mask" in between these 2 screens but I see no mask nor any icon between the 2 screens as appears in his video.

You can't even detect if he's in Edit or Cut page.

Thank you!

Thank you!

On a single monitor, if you have both the Media Pool and Inspector windows open, there is only space for one viewer. In this case you can switch between the Source and Timeline viewers by using the Q key on your keyboard.

You can also set it to only ever show one viewer at a time whether the Inspector window is open or not, again using the Q key to switch between them.

I've always had room for Media Pool, both Viewers and the Inspector.

I started with a 1080 monitor, which I recommend as the minimum.

Jim, as I've said before, this is on an HD 1920x1080 monitor at native scaling, 100%.
Please share a screen shot showing both viewers with the Media Pool and Inspector open. ;)

Well, either things changed since I used a 1080 monitor, or I'm remembering wrong. (Probably the latter. I moved to a 1440 monitor soon after starting with Resolve, and now use a 2160 monitor.)

I can have either Media Pool or Inspector open with two viewers, not both.

My apologies.

That said, I may have to revise my general recommendation to use nothing less than a 1080 monitor here. What a horrid experience, real-estate wise. I'm thinking 1440 should be the bare minimum for Resolve.

How do we set both edit page viewers to be timeline? Because of stacked clips and a need to visually sync (long story) it would be super helpful to view 2 layers from the timeline on the 2 viewers. I'm sure there's a setting...

Hey Gailin, sadly I've found only very limited support for that. The active timeline is always shown in the Timeline Viewer window, a second timeline (eg one that you have stacked) can be displayed in the Source Viewer window if you drag it in from the Media Pool. In and Out marks will be synced between the two views but the Playhead will not. ie Marking In and Out in the Source Viewer will update the In and Out in the Stacked Timeline (and vice versa) but scrubbing the playhead in the Source Window will not scrub the playhead in the Stacked Timeline. It's not ideal but it can be workable when necessary.
Let's have a return to the glory days, when press releases for new versions included text like "...with over 300 new features and improvements that professional editors and colorists have asked for."

Can you gang the viewers to achieve what you need?

Select Gang Viewers, and then drag the Timeline from the Media Pool to the Source viewer. I'm not sure how flexible this would be for what you want to do. If you un-gang the viewers you can move them independently.

Thank you so much!

What I have works for now doing this, though I feel down the line I may have to use two different video tracks in my timeline (based on how I edit them). Will I be able to do that instead of picking out objects from my media pool?

I suppose a workaround to this is to render a clip of something then make it a media file, but I was just wondering if this can be done live or if one source can only be "timeline" rather than two different timeline video tracks.

Thanks again!

Related question here- is there any way to use the source viewer as a timeline viewer?

For example - if I have 2 stacked timelines, when I scrub through one it shows in the right viewer, but when I scrub through the other, the right viewer switches to that timeline instead. Is there anyway to show timeline 1 on the left and timeline 2 on the right?
