Resolve won't start on my Mac

PostMon Jun 29, 2020 10:35 pm

I went to open Fusion, and the program froze. I finally force quick it now it will not restart. I found a post about creating a copy of the config file, but that did not work. Any suggestions?

When you say it won't restart, what happens? Does the icon bounce, but no splash screen? Does the splash screen get to a particular point -- it prints out what it's loading as it goes -- and freeze? I can't say I'll have any answers, but knowing what it's doing could help someone recognize something.

Resolve not starting at all, or not opening that specific project?

If not opening at all, in Finder, go to /Library/Application Support/Blackmagic Design/DaVinci Resolve and run CaptureLogs. That will generate a .tgz log file on your desktop. Send a link to that.

Go into About This Mac - System Report, and in the System Information menus at the top, select File - Save. That will generate a .spx file. Send a link to that.

I finally got past the start up screen and can load a project, but it crashes when I try to open the Fusion tab. That was what caused the program to quick the first time and I could not reopen it without replacing the config file. Now Resolve taking about 5 min to get pass the start up screen.

Crashes when you go into the Fusion page on a new project, or on a specific project?

Logs and spx would be helpful.

Looks like there is a compatibility issue with 12.5 and Catalina.

I installed 12.5 on a Catalina system and get the same error as you.

Thank you so much for your answer Dwaine.

I want to use the resolve. But my mac is from 2012, so the lastest version of resolve doesn't work on my mac. I can use it, but doesn't work good.
That's the point I tried to install the 12.5. version.
Which version do you think works on my computer?
It is a Mac book pro 13 inch mid 2012
Processor: 2.9 GHz dual core Intel core i7
Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 4000 1536 mb
16 gb of memory

Thank you so much in advance

It's always a good idea not to use an OS much newer than the software you want to run.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

I don't have a machine that old to test with. I'd suggest you just work your way backwards through the last version of each major release.

If 18.0.4 doesn't work, try 17.4.6. If that doesn't work, try 16.2.8. If that doesn't work, then 15.3.1.

I'd be sort of surprised if 16.2.8 wouldn't run on that system.

I am running Monterray 12.6.3 and now 12.6.4 since yesterday. I run a 2018 intel i7 Mac mini with a Blackmagic egpu.

I have a dongle for the full version but not installed it before . I installed the latest version of studio earlier this week. It would not boot with no explanation. I uninstalled and reinstalled. No change. I uninstalled and then went back to the previous version. That won't boot either. The icon jumps in the dock but does not boot. I have tried ticking the use external egpu box on the app and vice versa. No change....

I followed the instructions on here re renaming the folder in prefs to .tmp and .bak. No change. The log files are empty. I must have reinstalled a dozen times now. Is there an explanation for this?

Send us a link to a Resolve diagnostics log file.

Open Finder and navigate to /Library/Application Support/Blackmagic Design/DaVinci Resolve and run the CaptureLogs.app app to make the log file.

That's unfortunate. One sort of log with totally corrupt data. It should contain not only log info but config info. The fact there is no config info means it's not surprising Resolve doesn't run.

This video has a good description for a clean Resolve install:

The first 4:40 describes backing up various Resolve settings info. Based on the log you sent, I'm guessing there won't be any of that. But you can watch it if desired.

At the 4:40 mark starts the Clean Install directions. The only thing I would suggest to do differently, if you think you might have any project data you want to save, would instead of Trashing the folders he describes trashing, to instead rename them. It will have the same effect as trashing them, as far as a new install goes, but it will retain existing info, if there is any existing info, that you could then maybe copy back into the new install.

Hi Dwaine

Thank you for your valuable assistance. Its booting fine now following those steps laid out in the video. Hard to understand how a new install can be corrupted.........
