Noob on Ubuntu 20.04, Crashing Resolve

Hi Everyone,

Downloaded Davinsi Resolve Lite in an effort to understand if it would be worth spending the money for the "Studio" vesrion.

My setup: Ubuntu 20.04, Intel i7 9700K, 32GB RAM, Saphire RX 5600 XT 6Gb ram, Samsung 970 M.2 1TB Disk.

Installed the ROCm drivers for the GPU and downloaded and installed the latest Davinci Resolve and made a deb package (0 errors). I can run Davinci Resolve, I can add Clips (Video) to my project, but once I try dragging the clips to the timeline Resolve crashes without any error.

I've tried transcoding the video into different formats as my footage is 4K from a Gopro Hero 8. Still no luck. Keeps crashing in the same manner.

Any pointers where to start looking? I'm a Davinci Resolve Noob - so please be patient with me.

Hi,
I'd try also the amdgpu-pro opencl driver from AMD. Check the online manual for the installation, also the Arch Wiki is a good source of information no matter what distro you are on. There are various installation recipes, you'll need to find out what works for your configuration.

I'm sorry because I can not help directly since I no longer have my vega56 machine for testing, I desisted and got an Nvidia RTX for my main machine.

I had 16.2 working, but seems there are some problems with fairlight. Consider rolling back to 16.0 as a last resort, I remember working fairly well on AMD.

Thanks, Yes, I'll try switching driver and see if that helps. secondly the version of Resolve. If nothing helps I'm contemplating switching the Sapphire RX 5600 for something a bit more purposeful, but not too far in terms of price. Maybe a Nvidia 2070 or similar.

Also try disabling the intel integrated gpu in the bios settings. This is suggested also with an Nvidia discrete gpu.

If you ever consider buying Studio version, Nvidia offers gpu decoding (for some formats) and especially if you want to edit high compression formats, like your Gopro or many prosumer Cameras in UHD 4k, it makes the difference.
On the other hand, the encoding part is nice to have, since is blazing fast, but other delivery workflow I find are better.

I'm a "team red" guy, but for Resolve on Linux I needed to go green. I have an RTX2060 super 8gb and for an hobbyst like me is perfect.

Good points and tips. Much appreciated!

Switching to the OEM amdgpu-pro drivers and opencl did the trick in terms of stabilizing Davinci Resolve. Thats a start :)

Now I’ll give this a try for a couple of days before deciding on a new Nvidia GPU. Tempting though.

Just wanted to share this as I found it a bit cumbersome to find the info myself.

As I’m editing Gopro 4K UHD footage on linux rig I need to transcode (Using the Resolve Lite version).

Tested a few different settings, and dnxhd works great, but file sizes become extremely large.

I ended up using mjpeg and pcm audio. Quality is good enough (Youtube in the end). Works great with my setup.
