blade/cut all tracks at once

PostTue Jul 07, 2020 5:38 pm

I've been using Resolve casually for about a year. I like it a lot. I have used other NLE, never enough to burn keyboard shortcuts into my brain. And each package seems to like its own terms, which is fine, but I can't seem to be able to search to find whatever problem I have.

I seem to have managed to broken a key feature: being able to cut (or use the blade) all tracks at once. I expect I accidentally clicked some option or another. This seems to change randomly as I stumble thru options.

I typically have three tracks in a project, (1) a title/caption track of text, (2) the video track and (3) the sound track. So I scroll the playhead, grab the blade, cut, go to another spot, blade again, and ripple cut.
Works great.

Except when I pick an option that separates the tracks. I think the Resolve term is "link" or "lock" but I can't tell, and randomly clicking on one or the other doesn't seem to toggle this function.

In short, I want a single press (say B) to cut all the tracks not at the playhead but at a blade tool line.

I need to be able to toggle this on and off, so when I randomly turn it off in the future, I can get it back where I want.

Running DaVinci 16 on Windows 10 if that matters.

Please help

CTRL+B will cut all clips at the Playhead position on tracks with Auto Select on.

You could also select all the clips, right click and Link them. Then a single Blade left-click will cut them all.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

I'm been using ctrl-\
which cuts all of the tracks at once.
But I still have to manually select, and ctril-select each of them before I can "ripple delete" them.

For some reason, the select, right-click and "Link" approach doesn't do anything. I have no idea why

Do you have the Linked Selection button enabled, the one that looks like a chain?

I don't see that, where is it? or how to I see it.
Making random clicks....

If I select the audio and video tracks and right-click, I see "Link clips" as an option
and when I select it, I see the chain symbol. Its on the title bar of the track. But the
'blade' cut still only selects one track, not both.

When I use the blade, and it cuts one track, at last both tracks are still selected.
And if I cut using ctrl-\ it not only cuts both at the read-head, but keeps one side with both tracks selected.

Resolve 16.2.3.015 if that matters.

Thanks

Well, yeah. Adding a Cut won't also Select. Those are two separate actions.

Somehow, some setting, let the 'blade' tool cut both tracks under its own cursor, not the read-head.
At least this was how it worked 3 days ago for me. But now, blade or some other mode says to cut
only the one track.

For a ripple delete across multiple tracks I usually just mark in & out and ripple delete with the required track selectors active.

Thanks, can you please be more specific? what does "mark in" mean? and out?
are "track selectors active" the red bounding of the tracks?

As long as the clips are linked, it will.

I am not seeing that behavior now. I have the "chain lock" symbol.
Any idea what I'm doing wrong? or need to do to fix it?

Thanks

The chain will respect the link, if it exists. It will not create a link for clips that aren't yet linked.

Select the clips, right click, Link.

Trim menu > Ripple > Start to Playhead ... default Windows shortcut is Ctl-Shift-[
Note that here, as for most operations, Resolve uses the Auto Track Selector status for targeting track based edits.

As always, you can change to a preferred shortcut, if necessary, in the Keyboard Customization window.
Let's have a return to the glory days, when press releases for new versions included text like "...with over 300 new features and improvements that professional editors and colorists have asked for."
