Change behavior for when clip is placed on top of another?

PostMon Jul 20, 2020 2:37 pm

Resolve 16.2.4 Paid

I'm coming over from Vegas, and when you drop a clip on top of another in that application, then it basically makes an automatic cross-fade. Was nice for bumping two clips together.

However, in Resolve I noticed that if anything is moved on top of another clip it auto deletes what is under it. Sometimes this is frustrating because if i'm adding a new clip in my timeline and it doesn't jump to a new track automatically, then it can just delete whatever it got set on top of.

Wondering if there's anyway to change this behavior with current settings.

Your terminology is confusing.

If a video clip is "on top of" another, that means it's on a higher number track, and it won't overwrite anything below. As Resolve doesn't do A/B transitions, both clips will need to be on the same track.

There are several behaviors one can achieve when placing clips on the same track - Insert, Overwrite, Replace.

Have you gone through the Beginner's Guide and lessons yet? I found it immensely helpful when switching over from Premiere Pro.

I think that overlapping clips to automatically crossfade them was one of the most time saving aspects of Vegas. If it hadn't been constantly crashing and glitching on rendering I might have stuck with Vegas.

If there is a way to duplicate this behavior in Resolve, I haven't found it.

Hold Alt + Shift and drag a clip on top of another.

It's close, but it doesn't snap to the dissolve time like Vegas did.
Thanks for the input!

Also coming from Vegas I found the behavior of Resolve in respect to what you describe to also be annoying.

Dropping a clip onto (and over) another clip on the same track in Vegas is pretty much the same as just positioning it on a track above the original. It's non-destructive and quite intuitive. In Resolve it's a lot different.

As for the cross-fade transition situation, I also found this annoyingly more complicated with Resolve and in fact, the entire transition setup with Resolve still irks me somewhat -- especially the way that transitions just "disappear" sometimes if you're repositioning clips or doing other timeline stuff. Some transitions also screw with things like zoom levels set in the inspector window. Either I'm a *very* slow learner (that's an odds-on favourite) or it's an area that could do with a lot of work.

It is what it is...
I've never used Vegas but I have used a host of other NLEs.
I guess it what you are used to but right clicking and adding a dissolve between two shots is so simple and intuitive I would had for it to be changed.

My understanding is that transitions should be chosen with an eye towards advancing the story. Sometimes a straight cut works best for two particular clips, sometimes a dissolve, etc. This is just my work flow, but I find it difficult to make those decisions until I am done or close to done manipulating the clips. I may conceptually consider what I will use but wait until later in the process to finally apply them.

As they have prefferations to FCPX or Premiere PRO users, so is more logical to give the option to have a button for AUTO CROSSFADING and later dragging over if needed another transition fx just as simply Vegas Pro has.. also the zoom in/out should detect when cursor is in timeline area and AUTO zooms in/out just by the mouse wheel.. and one other i should be able to click in any empty space in timeline area and timeline bar position should move to that spot and if hold and drag should highlight multiple clips in its area! THAT SIMPLE!!!
