The Activation license allows for two installs. I don't know if they both have to be the same OS, though.
I presume the dongle will 'activate' Studio on any system into which it's plugged.
The Free version can be used on any qualified machine.

Basically what Jim said. Doesn't matter what the OS is.
To be clear, you can only have one version of Resolve installed at a time, in any given system.
You can't have Resolve 15.3.1 and 16.2.5 installed on the same system and bounce between them.
You install the version you need, when you need it, where you need it.

The Free version can be installed on any machine capable of running it and used for any kind of project. But in all cases, only one version of Resolve can be installed on any give machine.

Thought I would post on this thread since it's very closely related.
So in the past I've just only downloaded Davinci Resolve and used as free.
At some point along the way, I think last fall and I don't remember how I did it, also installed Fusion to give a whirl and look at.
In both cases I was using as free version.
So recently thought I would try more recent version and downloaded the studio version...thinking I could at least use Resolve/Fusion 'free' like before.
But when I bring up Resolve it asks for a dongle (can't use as free version).
So I guess I will have to uninstall Studio and just install Resolve as an individual app?
Clarification of how the licensing works in this regards is appreciated.

@Hesham: Yes, you can use the free version of Resolve for commercial projects.
@Jay: On the Support page in the DaVinci Resolve and Fusion downloads area, if the Fusion or Resolve download has Studio in the name, that's the paid version that requires a license, either an Activation code or USB dongle, depending on the product.
If you had the free version of Resolve and the free version of Fusion installed, and then installed the Fusion Studio version, correct, it won't run without a dongle. But that should have no impact at all on Resolve. If you have the free version of Resolve installed, it will still work. It doesn't care about Fusion Studio being installed.
So it would seem that you also installed a Resolve Studio version, and not the free version. Again, the free version of the Resolve download is the one that doesn't have Studio in the name. Download and install the free version and it should work as it had been.
As of Fusion 16, there is no longer a free Fusion version. So all Fusion 16.x versions are ONLY Studio versions. The last free Fusion version is 9.0.2 (the one without Studio in the name).

is still valid for DaVinci Resolve 17 in 2021?

Thanks for your quick response!
Is there an EULA where I can check topics like this in detail?
I couldn't find one.
Cheers
