Ruler to straighten horizon in the edit tab

PostSat Sep 26, 2020 7:15 am

It would be great if in the near future in the edit tab there would be a ruler to straighten lines like the horizon. Shooting lots of drone footage this is always a pain. I usually guess by the eye but it only goes so far and errors are plenty with this method.

Simple method.
Select shot
Open inspector and use CROP TOP.
This will give you a horizontal wipe that can be place anywhere on the screen for alignment purposes.

More complex.
Go to Effects library>open fx>resolve fx generate>grid and drop it onto the shot you wish to align.

Or go to Effects library>open fx and search for "grid"
Don't forget to switch search off after you finish and then delete the grid from the shot using the inspector.

Workarounds indeed.
If one rotates the clip as needed for the horizon to become horizontal does the crop rotate as well or does it remain horizontal?

In reality it can't beat actual guides and rulers as implemented by adobe, which can be imported too.
Helps in compositional settings as well, consistent placement of text or elements throughout a timeline etc

Even simpler: install the straighten up macro I created, that's available inside of reactor. It lets you define the horizon and straighten it out in one go. You can even animate the values in case of drifting.

Yes I know there are many workarounds, I personally use the Windows Generator in the Toolbox but as this is I think a much used feature to be able to straighten shots it should be as easy as the straighten rules in Photoshop. Drag the rules and done. Should be easy to implement as would be a really practical addition that most users could benefit.

That's what my macro does. I think if you install it in the right place, you might even be able to do it in the edit page. (not sure though, I've never tried it)
