Some BRAW clips showing up as offline

Hey,
Sorry if this has been asked, but I've been trying to figure this out for a couple of days now and have searched and found nothing. I'm fairly new to Resolve but have been editing for about 15 years mainly on Final Cut 7/X.

SPECS:
I'm currently running the free Resolve V. 16.2.7.010 on Windows 10 with a RTX 2070 GPU.

Footage is:
- Ursa Mini Pro (V1 I think?)
- mainly in 4.6K, but there's some slow motion stuff that was shot at 4K and 2K
- BRAW codec (unsure of compression)

ISSUE:
*all clips played back 100% in camera*
Random BRAW clips will not play video or audio from the file explorer in the BRAW player. These same clips show up as Media Offline (the entire clip, not just flashes) when viewed/ imported into Resolve, however they play the audio fine. I put all of the clips into a timeline then opened the timeline in the color tab. If I click on one of the "offline" clips and change the "Decode Using" setting from "Project" to "Clip" the offline clips become playable and no longer show as offline... Problem solved, or so I thought.

This is where I am really stuck: The clips' thumbnails all display fine in the color tab. I am able to play the clips in real time. When I switch back to the "Edit" tab all of those clips show up as Offline Media again, both in the media browser and the timeline thumbnail. HOWEVER, those clips will play in the timeline... which is a bit of a work around but I have lots of footage and would love to have it properly organized and viewable in Bins without having to export each clip individually with the color baked in.

I've tried trouble shooting quite a bit.

The clips that are having this issue (about 30-40% of all the braw clips) seem to be random. Resolution, frame rate, card it was shot on (I've got 9 cards in total, mix of SSD, CFast and SD and the issue is on all of them) don't seem to the cause.
I've tried creating optimized media for the clips with no luck.
The footage is backed up onto 3 different hard drives, and the issue is almost consistent between all drives... though sometimes some clips will play from one drive but not the other.
I tried opening and playing them in Premiere. No luck
I tried converting the files with Media Encoder. no luck.
I've tried clearing caches.
I've tried updating Resolve/ Reinstalling it.
I've tried it on a Macbook, with the same results.

A colleague of mine has a copy of the footage and tried it on a Mac Pro (Trash Can one) and said everything played fine from Finder/ BRAW player.

I hope this is a rookie, stupid thing I'm missing. Any insight would be amazing.

Thanks!

SOLVED.

The public beta of 16.3 that was released this morning did the trick.
... I didn’t even check for an update again today since I newly updated last night.
Not sure the cause still though.

The cause is that starting in camera software version 6.9.4, new ISO selections were implemented.

None of the Resolve release code supports those yet. But the 16.3 betas do.

If a clip was shot with one of the new ISO's, it will appear Offline in the Resolve Media page, with versions through 16.2.7.

If you put the clips on a timeline and go to the Color page, in the Camera Raw palette, set Decode Using to Clip, you'll now see the clip.

But if you have clips like that, life will be easier with the 16.3 beta code.

Interesting! I didn't shoot the Ursa footage, so I was unware of that. VERY happy the 16.3 beta worked. Thanks for the reply :)

Hey @ Dwaine!
I am experiencing something very odd...
Pocket 4k shooting 4k Braw 5:1 and several of my clips are showing up in the timeline as "partly offline"
the beginning of the clip plays but then it goes to offline... I was experimenting with some print stepping (shooting 6fps) would that do it? Was shooting to a T5 1TB and currently have 17b5 Resolve.

Try this:
- Turn off render cache
- Delete all saved render cache
- Right click on the thumbnail, choose update all thumbnails.

Thanks for responding Tom but that didn't work :-)

Okay, well one more easy thing to try:
- Open your project
- Go to the media page
- Media Storage
- Highlight the drive containing the media
- Right click, choose Refresh
- From File tab choose Project Manager
- Highlight your project
- Right click, choose Update Thumbnails
- Right click, choose Refresh

Last thing:
- Go to Color Page
- From File tab Save Project As, rename it.
- Open the new project file name

If not related to corrupt data base which you are trying to repair by saving new project name step, or otherwise verifying media still has or doesn’t have same problem if used in a new project, then if those steps don’t work, it almost sounds like physical media drives are going offline, to sleep etc, power saving, compressed drive etc., in which case could look into underlying Windows settings.

For "under-cranked" footage when using off-speed this is currently expected behaviour. What you get is a file that has video frames that last a shorter duration than the audio because the audio is still in "real time" (at the project rate). The lower the sensor frame rate, the sooner the video content will end before the audio does. You're not missing anything from the clip.

This is the same behaviour as it was "under-cranking" our cameras with cDNG FYI.

I assumed it had something to do with that! thanks for the help and good to know about cDNG as well!

I am experiencing the same problem.
I rub 17.3.1 on windows. 64 gb ram, 16gb AMD vegan radeon frontier edition (liquid cooled)

I just received an archived project from a Mac with all Braw files shot with a cinema camera 4k, 4k dci, 23.97 film log Gen 4.
All the files appeared off line.
Resolve is not able to see the Braw files in the drive.
The BMD Braw file reader (2.1) is not able to play them.

I am really in need of an advice here.

Hi, I have a similar problem.

I have a Mac with MacOs BigSur 11.5.2 and DaVinciResolve Studio 17.3.1

Some braw files shows some 'media offline' red frames. These files play without problems in my bmpcc6k pro and on the braw player of my Mac, but the red frames appears on DaVinci Resolve Cut, Edit and Color pages.

Any Idea? Can you help me?

Thanks.

If you are seeing that only for some frames, that means frames were dropped during recording.

If you carefully step through those same frames using the BRAW Player app, you'll see that it freezes on the last good frame and picks up on the next good frame.

I tried opening and playing them in Premiere. No luck
I tried converting the files with Media Encoder. no luck.

You need a BRAW importer plugin to do that, either the official PrPro plugin from BMD or BRAW Studio

If Dwaine's assumption (which has very high probability) is correct transcoding can't change that.

I'm having a similar issue with Media Offline. We shot using a bmpcc 4k, however, we used a U1 Sandisk SD XC card. I've been told that when shooting 4k video you must use a U3 or frames will drop causing the Media Offline issue. Can this be corrected? If so, how can I do it. Re-shooting is out of the question due to budget constraints. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Well, there's no way to get those missing frames, which would be my own definition of "correct".

If the camera or the BRAW player can cover up those missing frames – which it does in many cases – get a recorder.

Any HDMI recorder which is recording in a format you need, if the BRAW player works.
For the camera, depending on the model, you may need a recorder with HDMI or SDI (or a converter).

Uli, if I use an HDMI recorder, do I record the timeline with the media offline or all of the original non-edited clips? Will it get rid of the media offline issue that I THINK is caused by not using the correct SD card(We used a 64GB U1 Sandisk SD XC card for video recording in 4K)? I'm a beginner if you couldn't already tell. Lol. Thank you for your help!

You’ll need to try the standalone BRAW player, which may or may not play over the damaged parts.
Not DR.

The stand alone BRAW player app won't show Offline frames like Resolve does. It will freeze on the last good frame it sees, until the next good frame comes along.

If there are only random scattered frames missing, this doesn't look too bad.

If there are lots of bad contiguous frames, the freezing will be much more apparent.

But try it and see how it looks.

Exactly what I was referring to, but Dwaine explains it better.
It’s all about getting something bearable, but only you can decide.

@Randy
That works only for BRAW. Sorry, but your footage is gone forever.

Uli and Dwaine, the BRAW player isn't working on my computer. I've installed and re-installed it several times but all it gives me is a white pop-up icon that disappears on the task bar. Any recommendations on what I can do to get the player to work? Thank you.

What are your computer details?

What OS?

What Resolve version? And Studio or free?

What CPU?

What GPU? What GPU driver?

A Resolve log would be helpful.

I would probably expect BRAW Player to work with a Ryzen iGPU.

What's odd is that Resolve uses the same files as BRAW Player. So if Resolve can play the BRAW files, I would expect the BRAW Player app to work. Unless Resolve is not playing/showing the BRAW files at all?

A Resolve log and a Windows System Information .NFO file could be helpful.

Put it on a file sharing site, and post a link to the file here.

As a new user, the system may not let you post URLs. If that's an issue, just put a space near the front of the URL, so the system doesn't think it's a URL.

Thanks, that works.

Update your NVIDIA driver to the current Studio driver for your RTX 2060 Super GPU.

When you run the new driver installer, select the Custom (Advanced) installation option, then select the "Perform a clean installation" checkbox.

And actually, you have newer BRAW components than Resolve 17.4.6 would have installed. To make sure we get those aligned, open the Windows Apps - Apps & features control panel, and select Blackmagic Raw Common Components, then Uninstall. If there is anything else Blackmagic Raw related installed, uninstall that as well.

Then run the Resolve Studio 17.4.6 installer again. It should have the Blackmagic Raw Player option selected. Click Install.

If you still have issues with the BRAW player after that, send another NFO file.

Not for any Resolve related issues. Updating to Windows 11 would be a personal preference thing, and would depend on your computer being Win11 capable.

I would note that if you have a working Resolve system on Windows 10, that a Windows 11 update COULD break it, depending on lots of things.

No sir, it doesn't have that. However, when I try to turn on the BRAW player it gives me this message.

OpenGL version 2.0 or later is required to run this application. Your graphics driver indicates support for OpenGL version 0.0.

Should be OK for an HD project. Probably OK for a UHD project if you don't use too many heavy Fusion or OFX effects.

Oh, and installing an OpenCL and OpenGL Compatibility Pack could well break Resolve. Although that seems more likely to happen on a Win11 system, for some reason.

Ok, so, I need to uninstall the OpenCL and OpenGL Compatibility Pack? Just install an OpenGL 2.0.0 version or later as the Blackmagic RAW Player says? How?

Remember, the main problem that I'm reaching out to you all is that I can't remove the "Media Offline" issue that is in 90% of the feature film. Thank you so much for helping us out. We are super grateful!

I've made a somewhat surprising discovery. Looking at this on a relatively new Windows machine with Resolve Studio 17.4.6, the stand alone BRAW Player app also didn't work. Nor did the BRAW Speed Test app.

So it appears that the 17.4.6 Studio Windows installer is not doing a complete job of getting the BRAW Player app installed properly.

It will take more research to sort out exactly what's going on with that. But there is a simple solution.

Go to the BMD Support page, and select Professional Cameras:

https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/suppor ... al-cameras

Then select Blackmagic Raw 2.4, and download the Windows version. Since this is an SDK, you'll need to fill out Your Details section on the left. You don't need to worry about the stuff on the right. This is the same info you fill out when you download the FREE Resolve version.

Extract the zip and run the "Install Blackmagic RAW v.24" installer file.

That will hopefully fix your BRAW Player issue. Let me know.

As to the whole reason you are trying to use the BRAW Player, which is apparently an effort to recover BRAW files with missing frames, I suspect, based on your initial description of that issue, that you'll be disappointed in how the BRAW Player plays the files. There won't be any Offline images, but if the missing frames issue is as bad as it sounds, you'll see lots of noticeable pauses during the BRAW playback, as it freezes on a good frame and waits for the next good frame. But hopefully it will be helpful to recover something.

Dwaine, not even the Blackmagic RAW player 2.4 version didn't work as well. I will have to wait on the research. Whatever the player can provide would be a blessing. Hoping for the best.
