Major problem with playback on Ryzen 7 and AMD Radeon

PostSat Oct 24, 2020 5:15 am

Hello Everyone.
I am having a major problem with DaVinci Resolve and I hope somebody could give me a hint what is wrong. Tried different settings, and searched the forum for solution - no result.
When I add videos to the timeline and cut them a little bit, the preview gets stuck on one frame (link to the film depicting the problem on vimeo below). When I render it also comes out broken. Restartiing resolve helps for a little bit. Audio plays okay.
The videos are in H.264 format, computer is Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 on Ryzen 4700U and AMD Radeon Graphics. I would really appreciate your help. Thank you.

Just an update.
Importing files work fine, putting them on a timeline also, cutting them causes the problem. Saving the project and restarting resolve makes it play again normally (until any edit).

I ruled out the files (tried editing them on a different computer with Resolve), it's not external drive (copied files to internal SSD, I reinstalled gpu drivers, changed preview cache settings, and tried previous and future (beta versions) of DaVinci Resolve.
Nothing helped. Checked the files with old Adobe Premiere Elements - they work fine.
I am really desperate to find a solution as the major reason I updated to this computer is video editing. If anybody has any ideas what my be causing the problems I would really appreciate your help, cause right now I am thinking of returning the machine. Thank you.

Question to the developers (as the problem seems to manifest itself also in DaVinci Resolve Studio).
As this seems to be quite a common problem with the AMD Radeon GPU-s (link to similar problems from 2019 below):
Are you aware of the problem and is there a chance for a future update for new Radeon Cards or is it a Driver problem that you have no influence over?
I would really appreciate your input as of right now we are not able to use aforementioned laptop (lenovo yoga slim 7 with ryzen 4700U and AMD Radeon) with your amazing software. Thank you.

Another update.
New Radeon Drivers pushed by Win10 did not solve the problem.
Tested the machine with trial Adobe Premiere Pro 2020 - it works without any problems, that would probably mean it is a software incompatibility between AMD components and Davinci Resolve.
Again if anyone has any solution or had similar problem please let me know, I would appreciate it very much.

GPU: AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series, 2048 MB VRAM (GDDR5 1250 Mhz), latest Radeon software and drivers.
Status: Stable for editing, cutting and deliver, highly unstable under Fusion.

Hello,

New user and total beginner here. I have an old Radeon card, and Resolve works fine *except* when trying to do fancy stuff in Fusion.

I edited a 10 minutes video as my learning exercise (just some stupid YouTube tutorial) and the experience was really positive - working inside Cut and Edit it's a bless, super fast and responsive.

Once I finished my video, I thought I'd add a fancy after-outro easter egg kind of thing, and I needed some clean plate magic. This has been impossible at this point.

Some things I've observed:

1) Clean Plate seems to work fine.
2) Delta Keyer just make Resolve curl up to a ball and die (opening the option to send a crash report to Blackmagic, which I did about 10 times.)

At some point I tried to disable or mess around with my GPU settings, but of course that is not available now - it's either Auto, Cuda or OpenCL, no option to disable GPU processing at all. I did change this to OpenCL processing mode, GPU selection mode to Manual, and disabled "Using GPU scopes". With this Resolve actually stopped crashing, but Delta Keyer simply ignored me (no matter what setting I changed, it had no effect).

I have the (unsupported) suspicion that there is GPU-dependent code sprinkled everywhere in Resolve code, and that's why they removed the option to disable GPU code entirely. But GPU support for Radeon cards may be spotty.

This is likely an AMD driver issue. Their drivers are notorious for having stability issues. I think the latest stable drivers are 20.9.2, before that is 20.8.3. Before that the most stable drivers were the last release for Feb 2020 which I think is 20.2.3. Good luck.

Hi.

I don't know what resolution you try to work with?

But the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 with Ryzen 4700U and AMD Radeon Graphics is a very bad choice for Resolve.

Resolve require much stronger hardware. Have you considered a Desktop?

Regards Carsten.

Hi there. I am usually working on 1080p H.264 compression. Yoga slim was chosen as it seems a great compromise for portability and power and based on my experience it works really well with DaVinci Resolve (when it does) and Premiere Pro (it did for one week with no problem). I cannot go with a desktop setup for the time being as portability is a priority. I have been working on Premiere Elements for about 5 years now on a far inferior machine and Yoga Slim 7 is a major upgrade.
The problems I have with Resolve does not seem to be isolated which is confirmed in the video review below (and comments under that video).

Stating it is the drivers fault is probably right but, I don't want to be rude or anything, other video editors seem to cope with these drivers while Resolve doesn't. I was hoping developers might look into it as I really like the software and may be considering switching to studio version (and I am not the only one).
On my end I have been experimenting with the newest Radeon Adrenalin 2020 drivers (released mid October) with mixed results.

For my setup (Win 10 on Ryzen 7 3700x with Radeon RX 570 8GB) I've found that 20.9.1 with 16.2.7 is the most recent and stable combination right now. 20.9.1 is the Recommended WHQL version released September 16. I've tried with the latest Recommended WHQL driver (20.11.2) and that is not stable.

Hi everyone, I have the same problem on the Asus C15 with 4700u. Updated to 17 b3 did not help, and 17 B4-B6 does not start at all. Can't find graphics card. Maybe someone encountered?

Hi Mike,

I have an ASUS VivoBook with 16GB RAM, Ryzen 7 4700U and (only) the integrated AMD Radeon graphics adapter.

I had the same problem.
Yesterday I found a solution in the German forum that works for me
The author experienced that updating AMD driver stuff to version 21.2.3 did the trick.

Finding the right driver on the AMD website seems impossible to me. BUT:
They offer a tool that promises to analyze your AMD components and install the appropriate drivers:
Auto-Detect and Install Updates for Radeon™ Graphics and Ryzen™ Chipset Drivers for Windows

[Update: all URLs removed as I keep getting error messages that I'm not allowed to post URLs. What's going on here?
The name of the downloaded file reads: radeon-software-adrenalin-2020-21.2.3-minimalsetup-210222_web.exe ]

During installation I had the choice between two driver versions. I took the newer one which was not the "recommended version".
Now I have 21.2.3 and Resolve is working! Thanks a million to HarryH from the German forum!

I hope that works for you as well.

Cheers,
Klaus

Hi,

I also have an Asus Vivobook with Ryzen 7 4700U and integrated AMD Radeon GPU and was having the same problem as the OP with glitching video, stuck on a single frame when I edited anything, I updated the AMD drivers as per the previous post by Klaus and updated to 21.4.1 and now Resolve won't display any video at all.

Any suggestions please?

Thanks Klaus! I had similar problems at one point with a 3500U CPU/GPU. Now downgraded to 21.2.3 everything seems to be stable. I also need to disable Win10's real time anti-virus for even better stability.

Thanks again!
