While decoding support has expanded dramatically, one hold back is an efficient encoder.

From what I've read in the past, AV1 is a bit like bitcoin, you don't use CPU or GPU, but ASIC, and software encode will never be a reality as to make AV1 patent free it also became ridiculously inefficient and slow, but that is something hardware AV1 encoding should be able to solve, but until then it's not very useful

FYI - MainConcept has a an AV-1 encoder - https://www.mainconcept.com/products/fo ... codec.html I can not speak for how well it works, or what speed it encodes at. My question was if it will be available for us DR users to access via the plug in.

Intel is getting ready to ship AV1 hardware encode AV1 4:2:0 which should be enough for YT depending on what you are doing. Whether it will be supported by resolve is a very different question. I seem to remember the next generation of AMD will support AV1 4:2:0 as well and NVidia will also if they don't already. It is being put in mostly to support video conferencing but will help with some use cases that people here need.

Do you mean the encoder SDK supports M1 too ? So we can create plugins for arm 64 on macOS ?

Anyone experienced soft image with the free trial? Even when set to 4K 4:2:2 10-bit and constant 100Mbps bitrate it looks like upscaled 720p?

I hope this is because of it being free trial, don't wanna buy it then get these very bad results.

Would be weird to blur out the result for a trial, it wouldn't show the full capacity of the product to be bought

I tried the trial yesterday, HEVC 10 bits.

It's way faster than with Handbrake (on CPU, it can't export in 10 bits with GPU currently), better quality than the Nvenc version of Resolve (with a smaller file size)...I really liked it... BUT, it created banding (there was none on the original 8 bits footage). I tried multiple settings.

I was ready to just buy it (for the the quality/speed) but decided to try the trial.

Update

The MainConcept Plugin for DaVinci Resolve Studio version 1.2 lets you do even more with a new DVD preset group and macOS universal binaries. It extends the list formats in Blackmagic Design’s revolutionary video-editing solution by adding the following professional preset groups for project export:

AS-11 UK DPP
Sony XDCAM HD, XDCAM EX
Sony XAVC
Panasonic P2 DVCPRO
Panasonic P2 AVC Ultra, AVC Intra

The new DVD render profiles enable you to create streams that are compliant with common DVD authoring tools on all platforms—Windows, Linux and macOS systems (Intel as well as M1-based)

Additional improvements include an option for creating Sony XDCAM files with Closed GOPs and the ability to view plugin information (like version number and license status) in the DaVinci Resolve Studio UI.

The fast, efficient and reliable Codec Plugin for DaVinci Resolve Studio is the officially approved companion to Blackmagic Design’s state-of-the-art software suite.

It would be nice though if Resolve would fully support *importing* all Sony formats as well.
The files from my Sony NX80 can be read in Resolve fine, but all the metadata that's in the file - and that for example Edius can read out of the box - is ignored even though information on shutter speed color and gamma space is all there in the file.

Resolve still lacks in reading metadata from different formats. Maybe 1 day. It's needed in Resolve more than in NLEs like Edius.

Damn, that's a good point. I had been wondering why there was an encode plugin API but not decode. And that might explain it: it's been theorised that BMD do not want to support ProRes RAW, and therefore maybe they won't allow decoder plugins because then someone else could provide ProRes RAW support, and challenge their own BRAW.

I hope that's not true, but it might be..

Why?
All depends on your situation. If you're desperate you can rent for an hour only.
Overall it's not cheap, but it's all relevant.

Alex's tool works differently internally (with same end result). It's less restrictive (doesn't need CBR file) but it's only for ProRes and only for video. CineX works with few codecs and also with audio. It requires strict CBR based codecs though.

Which generates the need for an extra step to prepare your master.
It would be great if BM could add ProRes CBR as an option.

I was so stumped that I had to check with my colleague why we needed the extra step in that project.
Now I got it: they used DR on a PC and had the ProRes files generated elsewhere. I know that DNxHR is normally CBR, but the client insisted on ProRes.

Has been a while…

So, great to know DR can take care of it on a Mac when needed.

All still used specific formats based on mpeg2 are in the plug-in.
There is not much of generic usage for mpeg2 as it’s obsolete.
XDCAM/IMX and DVD is basically it.
If you need it then write to MainConcpet with request.

Hello,
Can any third party software developer create their own encoder plugin pack? I am interested in adding another JPEG 2000 encoder.
Thanks,
Aaron

Yes. You'll find documentation and examples in Resolve by going to Help > Documentation > Developer. Look for the CodecPlugin folder. Note that encoder plugins can only be installed in Resolve Studio.
