Resolve 17 on macOS Big Sur performance drop

PostSat Nov 14, 2020 8:11 am

This weekend I decided to take the big step and clean install Big Sur on my iMac, after using the beta on my MacBook without major issues. I also played with Resolve 17.0B on Catalina, and everything was good.

On Resolve 17.0B on Big Sur, to my horror, playback performance dropped by at least 1/3, projects that smoothly ran at 30fps on Catalina / Resolve 17.0B now are struggling pathetically at 8 - 15 fps. Not even caching all the nodes, or enabling Render Cache Color Output helps, not even bypassing color grades and Fusion effects (Shift-D).

Now I'm contemplating downgrading to Catalina, but I would rather wait a bit, maybe someone has an ideea or a tip that I completely missed.

Resolve 17 on macOS Big Sur performance drop

Try the special 17.1 beta release for BigSur that BM released a few daysago. Have not tested it myself nor performance yet as only tested BigSur on an old laptop for functionality and initial compatibilty testing only.
And the obvious check on Mac that gpu mode is set to metal and not opencl

Unfortunately I did all that, in fact my first installed version of Resolve was 17.1B, then I downgraded to 17.0B to further investigate the problem.

After juggling with DaVinci Resolve versions and settings in various projects, I stumbled upon the culprit: Project Settings > Lookup Tables > 3D lookup table interpolation > Tetrahedral. As soon as I changed that setting back to Trilinear, Resolve 17.1B playback went back to normal.

All I can say is that Big Sur and Resolve 17 are hating tetrahedral interpolation.

I get it. My mom also always warned me to stay away from tetrahedral interpolations....

Well, staying away from tetrahedral is not such a huge issue. Most people probably never touched it anyway…
