Anamorphic Footage - Proxy Media Irregularities

PostSun Nov 15, 2020 10:53 pm

Hi,

I've been testing creating proxy files for 2:1 anamorphic clips. When created using the "make proxy" workflow, they render as square files, and appear square (squished) in timeline when proxy clips are enabled. Essentially the metadata that tells the online footage that the clips are "cinemascope" and converts the footage 2:1 doesn't seem to flow through to the proxies.

My work around has been to place all online clips on a 2.4:1 timeline and render out proxy files in the adjusted aspect ratio, rather than creating from the project window - for example rendering 1920x800 proxy files, to be attached as proxy files to my 3600x3000 anamorphic clips. These then behave as one would expect. While this workaround seems to be working fine - I would expect that the goal would be to have clips created as proxies from the project window to carry the "cinemascope" metadata across.

My queston is - is this a bug, or, is the way I'm creating anamorphic proxies actually the best practice?

Thanks,

Myles.

I just ran into this same issue with 17.1B Build 5 (on macOS 10.14.6) with Alexa Mini 4:3 Anamorphic footage (2880x2160 active picture, 2944x2160 raw ProRes dimensions).

Here's an example of creating a Half-Res ProRes Proxy:

Image

The physical proxy file is written with 1.0 PAR metadata, not 2.0. And there doesn't seem to be a way to force the PAR of the Proxy when linked in Resolve.

I have seen this as well.

(I reported it in another thread - https://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=126120).

Still appears to be an issue with 17b3.

i really do LOVE the ease and convenience to create proxies and used them on and off so simply...

however, i have the same problem with anamorphic clips, on 17.1.1 pro version.

i hope something can be done down the line...

i just had another go at creating proxies with anamorphic footage, and i'm happy with my new results now.
i'm on studio 17.2.1

first, set your project size and aspect ratio correctly.
(my new project is uhd, so for 2.39:1, i set 3840x1608)

unlike my previous attempt, i did NOT change the clip attribute setting in the bin anymore.

first, i created a proxie for every clip
then, with the clips on the timeline, i highlited each one and within the inspector/retime and scaling, i set the scaling to stretch.

now, playing the timeline, with or without using proxies, the aspect ratio stay the same!

and, of course, all addiitional fine tweeking are accessible in the inspector as well, clip by clip.

hth someone...

Hi Guys. i stumbled exactly on the same problem with the latest version.

using the scaling method on timeline for anamorphic clips are not idea because when we scale up - even if the proportion of Width and height is linked - the footage will squeeze in a weird proportion.o
my work around is this:

do all the original clip's attribute to anamorphic (in my case is 2.0) . generate the proxy as usual, then conform the timline's clips to the proxy files, using loose name matching.

this way the proxy will be treated the same way with the stretch.

Hope this helps!

Another solution is to switch from square to cinemascope in the master settings/Time line depending if you're in proxy/normal mode.
Hope it helps.

Hi. I'm on 18.0.1 Build 3 version of Resolve.

I just encountered this problem as I was doing proxies from Arri Alexa Mini 2.0 Anamorphic footage. 2880x2160 resolution.

I worked around this by creating two different PRESETS in the PROJECT SETTINGS panel. On both presets having the resolution 2880x1080 but changing the INPUT SCALING between the two - one with SCALE FULL FRAME WITH CROP(Original footage) and the other with STRETCH FRAME TO ALL CORNERS(Proxy footage). And I then go to PLAYBACK and change the PROXY HANDLING when switching between project settings.

Now I just edit with the proxies and switch project settings when I need to export with full resolution media.

I am delivering in 2.2:1 aspect ratio so I just changed the OUTPUT SCALING to get the preview correct. In this case 2376x1080 and scale full frame with crop. That works also if delivering in HD 1080p or any other resolution, you just change the output scaling to your delivery needs.

HTH!
