Davinci Resolve 16 and Open VPN - not compatable?

PostMon Nov 16, 2020 9:13 pm

I work from home and in order to be efficient I need to be able to upload and download files through a custom OpenVPN connection while editing. I can start up OpenVPN fine with no problem but as soon as I toggle "connect" and enter the authenticator code, Resolve immediately crashes and also crashes if I try to start it again displaying "Loading waveform monitor" and when it disappears ... both instances without a crash notification.

I've tried a re-install of Resolve and both NVIDIAs latest studio and game ready driver.
current driver: NVIDIA Studio 456.71

My system
Asus ROG Strix G512LW
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-10750H CPU @2.60GHz 2.59 GHz
Nvidia RTX 2070 (Mobile)
Intel 660p NVMe PCIe M.2 1TB
Hynix HMA81GS6DJR8N-XN 2x8GB

Not sure if this helps at all, but I run the Mozilla VPN with Resolve just fine.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

It's NordVPN here and all is well.
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.

Thank you for the suggestion, but I don't have the option of switching VPNs as it's setup by the organization I work for. I'm hoping Resolve 17 will be compatible. The built-in Windows VPN was working but then a fair number of people dropped out, including myself, so they set this up as the work-around.

Edit: Tested Resolve 17 and still have the same problem...

Did you ever find a workaround? I'm having this issue now, on 18.5, in 2023.

Same issue here. Using AirVPN and Resolve 18.5 crashes if I have my VPN on.

DR under NordVPN is stable for me too.

Many VPNs, including most corporate set up VPNs, route all traffic through the VPN, even what would be local network traffic. I don't know what effect that could have on Resolve, depending on your configuration. This is the redirect-gateway option in OpenVPN. Everything, including DNS requests, may be forced through the VPN. Corporate VPNs often include filtering, not allowing traffic to "unapproved" sites. Again. I don't know what Resolve needs access to, but, for example, licence checking may be blocked.

Mark

Hi.

Using BigIPEdgeClient (F5 VPN Client) at work and had the same issue.

It solved itself by switching from "Split Tunnel" to "Full Tunnel" in the server options.
For some reason when using "Full Tunnel" it opened like usual.
At "Split Tunnel" I see the window, then it checks the Fairlight Page and crashes.

Hope this solves the issue for some.

In such an environment, the dongle might be the better solution.

Still same issue with Resolve 19 beta. I need OpenVPN in my work. There's no other option. Now I need to close VPN while editing and I cannot do many work related tasks.

This topic is about OpenVPN. Not NordVPN. Also dongle has nothing to do with this.

There is a quick and dirty test, you can do, if you have an iPhone (other smartphones may allow the same approach).

Try enabling "Internet Sharing" on your iPhone, and set up and use that wireless connection (WiFi anything will do). If that works (albeit slow, maybe) your system as such is sound and can be used. If not, we ONLY have established, that the phone company may disallow VPN use for somer reason (maybe they have a "fee" on the option, check with them).

If that works, you need to look into your router setup (assuming you connect to the Internet via a router via ethernet or WiFi).

IF you have access to the configuration (not all leased routers allow that), you can look at the settings. BEFORE you do ANYTHING, remember to save the CURRENT configuration and safety regime (often different in scope and setup).

IF you do NOT have access to the router configuration, check with the Internet connection provider company, if there needs to be anything done (and fees to be paid) if your choice of VPN setup is to be used.

If you're working from a hotel, apartment hotel or other "temporary abode" supplying the internet access, you'll have to check with "management" or your "landlord" (for lack of better word).

Regards

P.S. I didn't spot geographical location (may have overlooked that info), but it may have significant influence on VPN use.

Hey,

I just found that i`m not alone with the OpenVPN issue. I`m on DR 19 and use OpenVPN Connect 3.5.1. Unfortunately the 'workaround' does not work for me.

Best,
Ingo
