Hi all,

I'm wondering if anyone has run into this. I own a Davinci Resolve dongle that works fine on my Mac Book Pro running Catalina, but when I connect my dongle to the new Mac mini M1 with Big Sur, Resolve can't detect the dongle. Anyone else running into this with any of the new Macs with the M1 chip? I'm currently trying to use the latest beta 17.1

Currently no dongle support on M1 systems.
We are looking into what can be done.

Hi I was about 5 minutes from buying an M1 Mini for resolve but I have a dongle and this has brought my plans to a screeching halt.

Will the non M1 optimized version work with the dongle?
Is it a hardware limitation of some kind?
I would be happy enough with using the dongle to authorise on one of my older Macs to activate an M1 mini.
But I am going to pause buying the m1 mini until I know it's going to work with my resolve dongle.

I have tried several options, and even tried 16.27 studio and that doesn't see the dongle either, there is a brief flash of a window before it asks for an activation code.

For now I have installed the none studio 17 beta 3. This is an intel version and i tried with a couple of adjustments and a Lut and it was playing 24fps 1080P with h264 codec.

I've tried the dongle with usb3.0 port and a usb2.0 port on my keyboard the system recognises it as OEM 12mb/s and it has a serial number (even tried that as an activation code). Seems the system recognises the dongle but isn't allowing resolve studio access.

The dongle is currently not working on the M1 with any version.

This is no longer the case I just want to say thank you to the blackmagic devs for resolving (no pun intended) this issue. 17.1 beta 4 universal binary

Hi, may I know how you managed to get it working? Mine still doesn't work even when I downloaded beta 5

I wonder if one of those usb over Ethernet apps would work. Some actually work as dongle servers. Dongle(s) connected to one machine in a lan and can be distributed to workstations as required.

What is the message? Is Resolve asking for a software key?

I just got the M1 MacBook Pro, and I'm happy to report the dongle works for me with the latest revision.

Can you check if you're using the 17.1 beta download (and not 17.0)? Betas 4 and above should work.

i just tried to get my new m1 macbook air working and read that the issues with dongles should be fixed?
unfortunately my dongle is still not working - latest beta (17.0b9) installed.

the dongle led keeps flashing as soon as pluged into the macbook - tried 2 different TB3 adapters, one is an apple original. what am i doing wrong or missing?

Can you contact BMD support in your region with a diagnostic log archive and your original purchase receipt for the dongle?

Hi Tobi,

17.0b9 will not work as it is compiled for Intel based Macs. You could try 17.1b9, which is Universal app and is reported to work with dongles.

If the dongle keeps flashing, something is wrong. My dongle is flashing a few times and then stays lit, even before DR is running.
I'm on a MB Air M1 with the latest version of 17.1 (build 18) and it works fine.

No problems with Mac mini M1 8-core CPU 8-core GPU 16GB RAM 512GB SSD and DaVinci Resolve Studio 17.1 Public Beta 9, Apple M1 !

Mac Mini M1 with dongle confirmed working with DaVinci Resolve Studio 17.1 Public Beta 10.

I had this problem too. Appently Big Sur doesn't supply power to usb connection anymore. Although if you plug into a hub, there will be power and it will be detected. My dongle was flashing and not detected when pluged directly into machine, when pluged into hub, through my monitor for example, it works fine. In other words , this was not a divinci resolve problem for me. It is a Big Sur problem. Maybe try this, it could work for you.

In that case it must be my machine. I'm on the mac pro 5.1.

The Mac Pro 5,1 is notorious for damaged USB ports. Try one on the back if you were using the front ones or vice versa.

I have a solution here, albeit a little roundabout. We use www.virtualhere.com dongle server software running on an Intel mac mini with Mac OS 10.14.6. The virtualhere client works fine on Mac OS 12.3 on a Mac Mini M1 machine and the dongle works with Resolve 17.

no, no USB 1.1 device works on the cMP under big sur.
workaround: simply connect a USB hub in between and plug in the dongle there.
