High dpi Windows 10 issue

PostFri Nov 20, 2020 1:07 pm

Hi all,
Resolve 17 beta2 has gui issues with Windows 10 Pro and high dpi monitors.
I have an LG 5K monitor working at 5120x2160 pixel

Setting Windows at 150% Resolve gui resolution is too big but ok for Adobe, Affinity or other programs.
Setting Windows at 100% Resolve gui is too tiny
Setting Windows at 125% Resolve gui is identical to 100%

At 150% pressing the shrink left button randomly the below buttons are replaced by a black bar.
Sometime some gui elements are placed in the wrong place of the screen. There is an incorrect redrawing of the gui.

I use an AMD Radeon Pro 580X with the 20.10.36.01 drivers
My hw is a Mac Pro 7.1 (bootcamp)

regards

This is an old problem. I really wished that they fixed it by v17 but guess not.

You can goto Davinci Resolve program properties by right clicking on DR icon, goto compatibility, high DPI setting and choose System in the bottom to get proper scaling, but the fonts will be blurry.

Then you need a physically larger monitor. Setting Display Scaling over 100% negates the only valid reason for a higher resolution screen.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Setting display scaling is only for UI. Not the actual pixel of digital contents (photos, videos, etc) displayed.

This is a weird bug to re-appear. I remember having problems with older versions of Resolve and custom scaling in Windows 10. I'm running 2 UHD Displays, both 28" screens with Windows 10 scaling on recommended setting of 150%. I had this bug a while back that floating windows in Resolve would disappear. But it got fixed quite some time back and I was running Resolve with custom scaling setting set to "system" and it worked perfectly fine (apart from the GUI looking a little soft and not as sharp for high DPI). But now the bug is back in the R17 beta. I really hope this will soon be fixed again, otherwise Resolve looks way to cramped and I'm missing a lot of screen estate.

it's definitively an issue.
If force the app to compatibility mode "system" I get the gui totally blurred, fonts, icons, etc. It's not ok for my eyes.
On MacOS this behaviour doesn't happen choosing various dpi resolutions.

Blackmagic developers should ask to Bitwig or Imageline companies how they created a perfect scaling high dpi interface on Windows 10 and MacOS.

I think Davinci Resolve MacOS developers are different by the ones working on Windows 10.

Rememeber how Ableton Live had the exact same issue with variable UI scaling in Windows. It took them years to implement a solution.

Happy to see that the disappearing floating windows bug when using Resolve with scaling in Windows 10 seems to be resolved with beta 3! :)

Trying to use Resolve with a 17" 4k laptop (Dell 5750 workstation) and a 2560x1440 27" monitor monitor (ASUS ProArt) has been a miserable experience. It's bad enough that you can't customize your own workspace (Resolve is just beyond abysmal with workspace customization), but when Resolve will *only* obey the scaling settings of the "primary" screen, it's unusable. If the 4k screen (17" laptop) is set to 200% scaling, everything on the 27" monitor is scaled to 200% as well (even though in Windows that screen is set to 100%). When that happens and the timeline is on the larger screen (because I want my video on the 4k screen), nearly a quarter of the screen real estate is taken up by the track names on the left, which Resolve won't allow you to scale horizontally (which is absolutely batsh*t crazy).

I have been enjoying editing in Resolve, but the limitations with the interface and work space customization are forcing my hand with returning to Premiere for future projects.

EDIT: Resolve v17_2 :: added screenshot (that is the farthest left you can scale the track name divider)

resolve scaling.png
27" screen, cannot minimize the track name area any farther, taking up nearly 1/4 of the timeline screen!

EDIT 2: The obvious (but horrible) workaround is to disable scaling for the 4k screen in windows while you work in Resolve. However, since Resolve FORCES you to view all your media on the Program screen when you are on the Edit page with Full Screen Timeline enabled, all the file names on the 4k monitor are displayed at about 6pt size (if they were in print). So the files you are trying to work with in the bins are completely illegible.

Working with Resolve is one of the worst GUI experiences I have ever had, bar none, and I am old enough to remember editing MIDI and audio in MS-DOS, so that's saying something.

UI sharpness is a valid reason. the '90s ended >20 years ago.

They don't care. This has been an issue for going on 5 years now. Clearly they all work on HD monitors over at Blackmagic.

We had similar problems with Steinberg's Cubase. It took them 4+ years to redesign the UI for Hi-DPI displays using the Windows 10 APIs.

I hope BlackMagicDesign addresses this.

It's now been over 5 years since this was first flagged. Dev team should be embarrassed.

Update from older Studio version to 17.4.1 and the UI is a mess. Big and ugly workspace. Big text and tiny time line and tinny, tinny video. I cant work with Resolve anymore. Have a 50 inch 4K HDR monitor. And here the color panel:
