GPU Memory full...why?

PostSat Nov 21, 2020 6:08 pm

I have a 4k monitor and up until a few days ago I used to have an AMD RX580 graphics card with 8Gb of RAM.

I few days ago I replaced the AMD graphics card with an Nvidia RTX 3070.

Today while creating a project, I keep getting a GPU memory full error and the entire Resolve 17 Beta freezes.

I have to either sign out of my computer or reboot. This is happening every few minutes on my current project.

This never happened with my RX 580 which had the exact same amount of Graphic RAM.

Please help stop this problem

I think I've found the problem.

When I installed my RTX 3070, I used the only available Nvidia driver 457.30 and I had one or two error messages at most.

Two days ago I noticed that Nvidia dis a Studio Driver so I completely removed the Gaming driver and installed the Studio driver. At this point I got error messages every few minutes both editing and rendering.
At one point I got the GPU full the second Resolve 17 booted up.
After removing the Studio driver, the problem went away.

So which driver are you using now?

I am using the normal Nvidia RTX 3070 driver, not the Studio Driver. And, I have not had a single GPU Memory crash.

I had an interesting experience with this issue. On Saturday, it was all working fine. Sunday, GPU memory full errors constantly -- as soon as I relaunched Resolve, and before actually doing anything. I updated to the latest nVidia Studio drivers, no change. Then I switched to the latest Game Ready drivers, and the GPU full issues stopped... but the brightness was changing throughout shots which wasn't happening before that.

Then I switched back to the Studio driver, and now it's working again... the render is clean, and the GPU memory full errors stopped.

Re: GPU Memory full...why?

PostTue Nov 24, 2020 9:29 pm

I'm currently running 17.0b2 Studio with a GTX1080 and previously was getting normal playback of my Helium 8K RED footage on a UHD timeline on the free version. I just upgraded to the Studio version of resolve and am now getting GPU Memory full, and then a failed to render error code: 700.

I have been using the GPU to debayer and decompress feature since it was rolled out, and tried going to debayer only, with no luck. I've also tried lowering debayer quality and still get the GPU Memory full issue as soon as I make any adjustment on a single node.

I tried going from Geforce Studio Driver 457.30 (current) to the Game Ready Driver, and still the problem persists. I'm hoping for a solution because I just bought the studio version and now nothing is working and I really don't want to have to roll back to v16.27 or whatever the last stable release was.

I should also mention I'm getting realtime 8k full res playback in REDCineX with 0 problems and the files are on an NVME M.2 Gen4 SSD. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Welcome to the world of beta software...

See if my trick works for you also -- when I switched to the Game Ready drivers things got better, but going back to the Studio drivers after that made a huge difference for the better.

Are you thinking the Studio driver didn't install properly, Rakesh? Switching to the Gaming driver then back got you a correct install?

Probably something along those lines. I can't think of any other reason that switching did the trick, so my guess was that there was some wonky library in the driver kit that got updated when I switched from the gaming to the studio driver.

I can't really talk for this specific beta, mostly because both my machines got a clean install of windows last week. But I (probably) remember something similar on one of the 16 beta, where for a couple of time I had to perform a clean install of the drivers to make them work.

Just download the studio driver, then instead of express installation select the custom one, then at the bottom of the checkbox window you can see one that say "perform clean install" or similar.

Only thing that was different for me was that trying to install the game ready drivers didn't work, nor switching back unless I did a clean driver install.

Maybe that clean install option could have saved me a bit of time over doing two installations... and it might be a good idea to do once in a while anyway. Thanks for that tip!

It seems that you can use the custom installation and select the "clean installation" checkbox so that you don't have to go back and forth.

Also, if you've already installed the latest, click the three (vertical) dots in the GeForce experience app and select reinstall from that menu, and then select custom and enable the clean install checkbox.

Resolve is behaving a lot better since I did that this afternoon!

While Rakesh Malik is totally right, IF you actually need to uninstall any sort of video driver (maybe because you have so many drivers stacked up on each other) I suggest you to use a program called Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU for short), but keep in mind that most of the times Windows will reinstall some sort of nvidia driver after you uninstalled them.

My usual procedure (when I actually need to do this) is: detaching from the web (most of the time just an ethernet cable), DDU, restart, checking if there are more driver underneath (via device manager under gpu), if you see the gpu name or something related to nvidia then repeat DDU and restart till you see something like "Base video display by Microsoft", at this point you can redownload geforce experience and install your studio drivers.

this is so strange because one would think the studio drivers is the correct driver to use for Davinci.
I mean... it is not a game, right?
And in fact, in the readme of this latest studio drivers version, they mention Davinci Resolve 17 support.

Unfortunately, I continue to get ample "Your GPU memory is full". I have done clean install of 457.30 (studio), and also tried clean install of 460.79 (game ready).

While DR continues to run, it would be nice to not have the system-pausing popups happening (and when I click ok, it brings DR to the foreground each time, then I go back to whatever I was doing to distract me while I wait for DR to finish crunching).

Well, it looks like there is an 'issue' in the STUDIO driver version 457.30, and this could explain that ...

Page 20 of https://us.download.nvidia.com/Windows/ ... -notes.pdf mention

Issue Some TAG-reporting APIs represent video memory using 32-bits instead of 64-bits, and consequently do not properly report available graphics memory when the TAG would otherwise exceed 4 gigabytes (GB). This results in under reporting of available memory and potentially undesirable behavior of applications that rely on these APIs to report available memory. The under reporting can be extreme. For example, 6 GB might be reported as 454 MB, and 8 GB might be reported as 1259 MB.

It also appears that the same problem exists in the GR driver

This is talking about a Windows issue (not Nvidia-specific), and afaik only impacts 32bit applications. As DaVinci Resolve is 64bit it shouldn't be impacted, and it would be equally effecting Amd, Nvidia's Game Ready, and Nvidia's Studio drivers if it was.

Re: GPU Memory full...why?

EDIT: while I was waiting for this to be approved I rolled back again after resetting my PC with the 2070 and it worked. I’m still unsure about the 5700 but I’m happy with the 2070 at the moment. I’ll edit and update with the exact driver I’m using(I’m not with my PC but I’ll check when I can).

I'm experiencing the same issue with all of my projects across two different GPUs on both DR 16 and 17. I have tried an AMD RX 5700xt, that was throwing an error code -40, and now I have an NVIDIA 2070 SUPER which is having this exact issue as the original post says. Am I doing something wrong? I have reset windows, uninstalled drivers with DDU multiple times, and done just about everything else I could think of besides throwing my desktop out of a window. I have tried GR and studio drivers, as well as the enterprise drivers on the 5700 xt. Let me know what you all think. I am so far beyond confused and honestly quite frustrated. Hopefully, you'll all be able to help. Thanks:) P.S. I have also tried manually changing the GPU processing mode, to no avail. HELP!

Well, its 14 months later and.....

I'm still having this problem.

What am I doing wrong?

Do I need to throw more money at this problem?

Surely a CPU with 12 cores, a new GPU Nvidia 3070 and 64Gb of RAM should be able to render 4k projects?

Please help me and advise how I can stop my Davinci resolve from crashing when rendering 4k projects.

I stumbled onto this feed. The problem sounds very familiar -- installed new, more powerful GPU, GPU Memory Full errors, and crashes. What I did not see in the feed was a discussion about adequate power supply. I used to have issues with GPU memory and crashes. After many months of frustration and trying everyone's little configuration tricks, I discovered the real problem. Even though on paper my power supply was adequate for running my new GPU, it wasn't enough. I swapped out my 800w power supply for a 1600w power supply (maybe an overkill), and poof, no more GPU memory errors and crashes.
