When I try to import XML from final cut the option is just grayed out and its not possible to import any XML.

Can anybody help me with this issue or is it because of the beta status?

System: MACmini M1 2020, resolve17b3 studio

Any help highly appreciated and thank you in advance!

Are you trying to import from the menu bar or the media pool?

via menu its greyed out. in the media pool its not showing up at all.

is there any other possibility what I could do from my side or is it some beta issue?

Can you check if this is specific to a project? If thats the case, you can send it to us.

thank you!

the file is too large to attach. do you have a service Mailadress where I can send it to or what would be best?

Put it on dropbox and a link here with a space in the path

I'm having the same issue - two years later. Not able to import FC XML from Premiere into Resolve 18.1.2.

Used to work fine last year in 2022.

I tried importing from the File menu, and right-clicking inside a Bin. I can choose an XML, and it looks like something's happening, but the Bin remains empty, and the History pane doesn't record an import event.

I tried several XMLs, and none of them imported, even XMLs that I already imported once into an earlier version of Resolve.

have you opened the XML in a text editor?
Are you sure its an EDIT xml and not something like a CDL/IMF/Dolby XML?

Are you on the Edit page when you import the XML file?

Yes to both questions. I've imported several XMLs in Resolve in the past that I still have on a drive that won't import now.

I tried an EDL export from Pr, and import into Resolve, and that didn't work either. I know there are multiple settings to get right, and it wasn't worth messing with. I just imported all the footage from the projects at hand, and was able to find the shots I needed the hard but sure way.

Yes. And, the Media page. Same result: nothing imports.

i have noticed i have issues occasionally with AAFs from Premiere, while other Resolve ops in my group have no problems with the same file..
i have found, washing an. AAF through Avid seems to fix it up.

I think it has to do with Composite clips in Premiere that dont translate correctly..
i know you're talking about XML, but maybe it's something similar.
sometimes, they even crash Resolve.

Sadly, i haven't figured out a Resolve solution to getting the buggy ones to work. Just using Avid to clean em up..

I just tried XML import in 18.1.3.8 (new build as of yesterday), and it's still not working.

I just successfully imported a few XML timelines so it's not that XML import is totally broken.

Pleas describe in detail what you are trying to do, and post a link to the xml?

Described earlier. I tried import by dragging, context clicking in Bin, and using File > Import menu - Import Media from XML.

Here's one I had successfully imported a couple of months ago:
https://spaces.hightail.com/receive/hITH5FH4bI

I export the XMLs from Premiere.

I imported your XML and it seemed to work. Here's a snap of what I got:

Well, that's curious. I wonder why it stopped working for me.

Thanks for testing that.

I have two other Macs. Maybe I'll install Resolve on one, and if XML imports work, I'll save the .drt and move it to my working machine.

Thanks for the further testing.

I tried:
- uninstalling Resolve
- boot disk search for "resolve" and deleted everything resolve related the uninstaller missed
- reinstall 18.1.3 - no luck

-uninstall 18.1.3, repeats step two, install Resolve 18.1 - still no import

-uninstall 18.1, boot dist search, etc.
-install 18.3.1 - no change. XML import still non-functioning.

The first time I uninstalled everything the uninstaller missed, I had to re-enter my serial.

I suspect there is a secret prefs file. Corrupted prefs make many apps misbehave. However, even after doing the manual uninstall of all the Resolve files, including the .plist (prefs) files, Resolve opened my last project and all my preferences had been preserved.

So, where's the secret Resolve prefs file? What's it named?

I tried holding Option while launching. That resets prefs on many apps, but apparently not Resolve.

How about making a screen recording so we can see exactly what you’re doing? Preferably with sound so you can narrate.

Not much to see. This is straightforward. Import > Media from XML, nothing happens.

you're trying to import media, you need to go to [new timeline] import XML first....

I just realized what my problem is. I should have been using "Import TIMELINE" from the File > Import menu, not "Import Media from XML."

It works fine when I use the correct option.

Sorry for the false alarm. And thanks for the suggestions.

Yup. Figured the screen recording might elucidate things.

IMHO it'd be nice if there was one Import XML command from which one would be presented with the things available in the XML to import rather than having to know what's in the XML and choosing the right Import XML command to use... but if I make that feature request - which I may anyway - I suspect people will vote it down.

FYI:
  • FCPX has an Import Media and an Import XML command.
  • Premiere has an Import command that handles any kind of file.
  • Resolve has separate Import commands for: Bin, Media, Media from XML, Timeline, Fusion Composition, Subtitle, Pre-conformed EDL, and Batch-List from EDL.
It's no less powerful to have the Import command recognize the file that's selected and do the appropriate thing. But it is much more cluttered in the UI to have these as separate commands.

Joe, while I’m for options, I’m also for simplification, but for the opposite side of the coin, if a [function] does too many things, my brain rend to explode!!!

Teh idea to post a screenshot was brilliant!

Apple seemed to think that it was important to specifically call out XML by having both an Import Media and Import XML command. I'm not sure I agree but I can see their reasoning.

But having Import commands for many things most users can't wrap their heads around - especially when people using those workflows can just use the regular Import command as they're quite comfortable with Resolve - that doesn't feel like a good thing to me.
