Optical Flow + speedwrap + 60fps

PostSun Dec 06, 2020 8:42 pm

Hi all, I am using Davinci and I am very satisfied. Basically I transcode 60fps movies through your program, as I really like how it handles artifacts and makes very smooth movements. But there is one problem that I could not figure out .... I hope you can help me with this? The essence of the problem is that when a frame change occurs in films, this change is also done smoothly and this is very striking. How to make sure that the frame change is not done smoothly?
So that you understand what I'm talking about, I give a link to an excerpt from a video with frequent frame changes:
mega.nz/file/ZxpgjZ7D#qeJf-7REz0dVvURXw45fqvI1hDvKeazj-UAT1BULu-c (just copy and paste into the address bar of the browser because i cant post links as i am new here)

and problem number two regarding artifacts:
mega.nz/file/8kh2kBoI#H8LBdLBEcvJ4WGwtb5fEQkcqbXyp1GRAyve8A-6DAk8

I don’t believe that it is impossible to eliminate such artifacts, because the scene is very simple and it’s just a background with buildings with balconies. Such similar artifacts can also occur, for example, with steps in a building or with a radiator.
For example, another program called smooth video project (SVP) does an excellent job with this scene (but I don't like this program, since it does not give maximum smoothness and it has a lot of artifacts in other, more complex scenes):
mega.nz/file/EtwSCCoY#qvE9HTsSoh9Jlgz_nCZjNRdtFmyCRgA0ATIRHEouem8

Original for this scene
mega.nz/file/k0pUFAxC#WLLpKjmNHSReb705nCoyHoYrSw8EwLRTYS-8fIBAJIk

What are the solutions to the first problem, where smoothness occurs when changing frames and the second problem, where artifacts occur with balconies in buildings?

You can manually split the clips between the scenes, so that Resolve won't estimate motion between those frames.

If you want, you might use Scene Cut Detection, where Resolve will try to detect changes in scene, and import them as different clips (it might work well for you, I suppose)

Take a look at page 358 of manual (available at https://documents.blackmagicdesign.com/ ... Manual.pdf)

I don't know if it's possible to avoid artifacts entirely, as it's a tricky scene and original video has low framerate.

You can, however, minimize them, by experimenting with the different "Motion Estimation" options:

I could minimize the artifacts in your clip using Resolve 17 beta 5 this way:

1 - Find out the "Motion Estimation" option that produces the least level of artifacts for the first scene. In my case, it was "Enhanced Faster";

2 - Note the area where the artifacts appeared:

3 - In the timeline, duplicate the clip, making sure it's on a track above the original;

4 - For the top clip, experiment with some other "Motion Estimation" option that doesn't produces artifacts in that area you noted before. In my case, it was "Standard Faster";

5 - Adjust the top clip, by cutting and cropping it, so that you can hide the artifacts of the clip that's below: (note the artifacts were greatly reduced if comparated to the previous frame)

6 - Repeat for other areas affected.

The final result I could get is here:

I've also split the scenes in different clips, to avoid the problem number 1 you had presented

Thank you very much, you helped a lot, now I am even more convinced that the film can be recoded with practically no artifacts
