What are 1st impressions about the speed editor from the lucky ones who got it...
I actually like it. I bought the full panel about 6 months ago but returned it, mainly becuase it took up half the desk and it just was unwieldy to type on....
I really like these as I edited for years on a Sony BVE-9100. This little panel is perfect. took me back 25 years when I was a full-time on-line editor.
I wasn't sure about the workflow with the cut page.... but I took several projects and re-edited them (specifically multi-cam) and worked out an even better workflow that I already had. I really like the Live Overwrite.
I've got a lot more playing to do to get it just right, but for Multicam, I like to use Sync bin to lay down my main shots (after the Video 1 master shot)... then I really found I like to use Live Overwrite to "paint" on reaction shots or a background instrument when cutting a band.
Also, I really find the trim features and adding/changing the duration of a transition to be faster. I just had to train myself to get use to scrolling the timeline so the smart playhead knows WHICH item I want to mess with.
Did find one issue, if I have laid down more than one source overwrite and they happen to be exactly the same in and/or out point, the smart playhead can figure out WHICH layer I want to trim... but that makes sense. So I have to resort to using a mouse to trim. But this only happens when I am sloppy and make two source overwrites the same length.
The biggest annoyance -- and this just might be ignorance -- is I can't figure out how to do an L-shaped edit with the panel (or on the cut page for that matter). Many times, my client wants me to sneak in the intro to a band's song while they're still talking then dissolve to the music full when they're done. Easy in the edit page, just roll the audio or video only. I can't figure out how to (or if it's possible) with the smart panel.
Of everything I bang out on a weekly basis, that's the only think I've found I can't do with the panel on the cut page... if I'm wrong or haven't figured it out PLEASE let me know.
For now, I'm just putting the talking head all the way to the end, then up making the band's in-point where I want to see their video - then going to the edit page to roll the audio portion back under the talking head.
But in summary.... 95% so far LOVE the speed editor.
