Dr 17 Studio + Speed Editor from B&H

PostThu Dec 10, 2020 4:23 am

I am curious to know if anyone has received their DR 17 studio with activation card with speed editor order at this point. I placed my order just over two weeks ago and I’m wondering if the backordered status is likely to change anytime soon.

I was told by B&H customer support that you have to wait for your speed editor with activation card to arrive and that simply getting a studio license key so you can install Studio is not an option.

Nope. I purchased mine on 11/14 and still on back order. However, If I recall BH had an option to ship together or separately. I seen this on check out. Assumed it meant shipping software first and then speed editor when available. Could be wrong, I purchased the dongle version.

I ordered mine on Nov 12 and received the activation card within a few days. The speed editor on my order just shows "New item, coming soon."

I received my Speed Editor yesterday from Adorama but I don't think I received my license yet. Sort of assumed it would be inside the hardware's box but this is my first Davinci purchase so it's all new to me.

I also ordered from B&H about Nov. 12. I got the activation card the next week and am still (anxiously) waiting on the backordered Speed Editor.

I ordered mine from Scan UK last week and it said at the time that it would ship on Dec. 11th.
I then got an email a couple of days ago confirming shipping tomorrow, and rechecking their site suggests availability from Dec. 11th.

So... hopefully get both in 3 or 4 days...

Well, BMD is an Australian company, so I guess we in the US are no more entitled to receiving the shipment than anyone else. I'm speculating that given the size of the US that orders here are significant. I can see a strategy to distributing shipments around the world as opposed to depleting the entire first run of inventory to a single country. I'll keep waiting and learn as much as I can about how to use it now so I can hit the ground running when it arrives.

I spoke to Adorama today to see if the DR 17 Studio license key would be provided right away if a new DR 17 Studio + Speed Editor order was placed. I first asked the question of a sales person who told me that the license key would be emailed to me right away.

I then decided to do a chat session with Adorama's customer support and was told that the license key would only be provided along with the speed editor when it ships. I tend to believe the customer support rep instead of the salesman. Her answer is consistent with what I have been told by B&H more than once.

It is obvious that Blackmagic Design is no longer providing license keys to it's resellers in the US for customers who buy the Studio + Speed Editor bundle. This is very disappointing as many of us have ordered using Paypal and have already been charged for our purchase.

All I want is to be able to install the Studio version of DR without having to wait for "God knows how long" for the Speed Editor to ship to me. After all, it appears that many early buyers got license keys right after their purchase. This is VERY disappointing.

I got my license in a couple of days, and the Speed Editor is "Backordered". (I am within a few hours of B&H and perhaps they decide to send or not based on shipping. Or perhaps they ran out of cards -- they do physically ship cards and I thought Grant implied that this was part of the requirements for them to avoid all kinds of different tax rates that happen for online purchases where you receive a code via email.

Mine has gone backwards, a little... :(

Scan UK are showing "overdue 11th Dec." on both the keyboard and the activation key - I emailed them at the weekend about an ETA and, while they got back to me promptly, they couldn't suggest an ETA at all.
Hopefully it's not too far away, now that other countries are starting to see shipments.

I got my shipping notice from B&H today, due Wednesday. I chose the option of having both items shipped together since I already have two Studio dongles and wasn't in a rush for a third license, so they're both en route together.

I ordered mine from CVP in the UK the morning after it was announced.

The SKU changed on their website a day or two later and suddenly there was a Speed Editor and a Speed Editor bundled with a license key.

I emailed them and they said I was going to get the bundle so not to panic.

So far I’ve had several emails saying they don’t know when they’ll have stock .... and a month on from ordering, it’s still showing as not in stock and extended lead times :(

It’s frustrating seeing some people getting them (notably via Scan it seems?) and sitting here none the wiser :( I thought CVP were a large enough reseller that they’d be near the top of the list ... I really hadn’t figured Scan in the picture at all tbh :(

I’d love to know what the hold up is :(

Mine showed up just this last Saturday from B&H. The activation card (which I really didn't need as I already owned Studio) showed up on Nov 13 (ordered on Nov 11). It look just about one month to get the speed editor

I ordered from ProAV.co.uk just after the announcement from BMD and I just missed out on the first stock that came in a couple of weeks ago. Today they told me they got some more in Friday and mine is shipping to me today. So should have it by Wednesday.

OTOH the Cheeseplate ordered at the same time is still elusive. Though the V-plate, adapter and V-lock batteries all arrived a couple of days after order! It's not just BMD kit that is production and distribution problems.

I spoke to CVP today.
They said they had been in touch with BMD on Friday and were told they would’ve dispatching “some” “soon”. Neither are very encouraging descriptors....
It seems they have 160 on order and I’m about 80th on the list (ordered end Nov). I’m not expecting to see anything this side of Christmas, but if you ordered on day 2 you should be at the top of the list and will get one of the “some” that are arriving “soon”.
If I’m not in the first batch, I suspect I’ll also have the joy of the new Brexit related Irish Sea crossing to struggle with too, for good measure.

What are 1st impressions about the speed editor from the lucky ones who got it...

I actually like it. I bought the full panel about 6 months ago but returned it, mainly becuase it took up half the desk and it just was unwieldy to type on....

I really like these as I edited for years on a Sony BVE-9100. This little panel is perfect. took me back 25 years when I was a full-time on-line editor.

I wasn't sure about the workflow with the cut page.... but I took several projects and re-edited them (specifically multi-cam) and worked out an even better workflow that I already had. I really like the Live Overwrite.

I've got a lot more playing to do to get it just right, but for Multicam, I like to use Sync bin to lay down my main shots (after the Video 1 master shot)... then I really found I like to use Live Overwrite to "paint" on reaction shots or a background instrument when cutting a band.

Also, I really find the trim features and adding/changing the duration of a transition to be faster. I just had to train myself to get use to scrolling the timeline so the smart playhead knows WHICH item I want to mess with.

Did find one issue, if I have laid down more than one source overwrite and they happen to be exactly the same in and/or out point, the smart playhead can figure out WHICH layer I want to trim... but that makes sense. So I have to resort to using a mouse to trim. But this only happens when I am sloppy and make two source overwrites the same length.

The biggest annoyance -- and this just might be ignorance -- is I can't figure out how to do an L-shaped edit with the panel (or on the cut page for that matter). Many times, my client wants me to sneak in the intro to a band's song while they're still talking then dissolve to the music full when they're done. Easy in the edit page, just roll the audio or video only. I can't figure out how to (or if it's possible) with the smart panel.

Of everything I bang out on a weekly basis, that's the only think I've found I can't do with the panel on the cut page... if I'm wrong or haven't figured it out PLEASE let me know.

For now, I'm just putting the talking head all the way to the end, then up making the band's in-point where I want to see their video - then going to the edit page to roll the audio portion back under the talking head.

But in summary.... 95% so far LOVE the speed editor.

Just received mine from B&H.

It evidently has a tiny charge, and my Mac's Bluetooth can see it as a keyboard and connect to it, but it doesn't light up or do anything. I plugged it into the laptop via USB-C and it works. I have it charging now so I can test Bluetooth.

Many of the obvious keys do work in Edit, by the way. You don't have the indicator that Cut has to tell you which is the closest edit, but it does select the closest edit for Trim In, Trim Out, etc, and as long as you're not in the middle of a clip where it's hard to tell which is closest, it works just like Cut. (You get the red/green indication so you can always confirm it's on the edit you want.) You can use the Volume key to adjust volume, the YPOS to move a clip vertically, double-tap ESC to undo, etc.

Some keys (cameras, etc) don't do anything in Edit, though, and, some keys sort-of work, like Move: it does move the clip but it automatically throws you into Jog mode, so you can't move a clip rapidly by going into Scroll mode first.

Solid construction, great feeling jog wheel. Shuttle is a bit mushy and hard to use. (I think you want to use the finger dimple, move it to the top, then engage shuttle. Nothing like a spring-loaded shuttle ring, but it might work well with some practice.) I'm very pleased.

Mine has arrived!!! (many thanks http://www.ProAV.co.uk )

DISAPPOINTED!!!!!
No instructions
No USB cable
NO on-off switch
HOW DO I TURN OFF THE BLUE TOOTH?

How do I know if it is charged and or how much it is charged? With no indication you can't take the chance on the battery. Can I run the keyboard via BlueTooth if I have an external charger plugged in? I uave a USB power bank I can use on the Keyboard withouy sucking power out of the laptop. I don't have a powerbank that will charge the laptop!!

NOTE we are running DVR16 and as you can't have both V16 and V17 on the same machine we won't load V17 until we finish current short project.

You can't tell from just the Speed Editor how much it is charged. You can tell from Resolve once it's paired, in the Preferences -> User -> Control Panels it will show up and show battery charge. It goes into a sleep mode when Resolve is not running. (The lights turn off, etc.)

It can be run directly connected via USB3, which is how I used it out of the box. Otherwise it evidently needs to charge for a while to work with Bluetooth. Once you've got it working with Bluetooth, you can have it plugged into a charger and use it wirelessly with Resolve. (I've done this with a spare MacBook charger, and it's pretty convenient. Hadn't thought about using it with my power bank.)

thanks for that.
The problem is if you are going out somewhere with a laptop and speed editor you have no idea of the charge unless you power up a computer and connect to it. USB power is he most common source available globally. So why put a battery in it?

Since you need to connect it to a computer to see the charge etc (and all computers have USB) why is the Bluetooth on. That should be an option to turn on/off from the computer. After the first time you could set it to permanently on if you wanted but the default should be OFF.

BTW I have a feeling that in many countries it is illegal to send electronics though shipping with a transmitter on.

It seems no one thought through the use cases.

Good point. I've started a Feature Request thread in the Feature Request forum and that's one of my suggestions. Do something like hold down SOURCE and TIMELINE together for four seconds and then the lights blink one or more times to indicate charge state.

And I also suggested something about an official wake-up sequence. I'll edit to add that it should also put it to sleep -- no BT -- if it's already awake, which is also a good point.

I did a battery life test (I left Resolve & Speed Editor on for a week 24/7). Only then was the battery depleted. SO just charge it up before you take out with your laptop and you probably good for a couple of weeks.

Battery Indicator: I noticed when I initially hooked it up by USB the the battery had a warning panel on the Resolve screen lower right corner by the settings wheel. It was red and warned battery was 2% or whatever. It went away after the battery was charged. But I suspect this is the intended battery level indicator and that they're probably ironing out a bug(s) before it's turned on full time in some future beta/release (Fingers crossed).

I was impressed with it's weight when I first got it. I now realize, after testing, that it's the HUGE BATTERY that adds that heft. Thank you for a wonderful tool at a sweet price BM!

Ditto. Resolve is somewhere between 30th Dec and 5th Jan, but that's immaterial as the editor is 20th January (and counting...) :(

Got mine from B&H last week, but didn't see the thread until today.

Answer to a couple questions:

1. I'm able to use Bluetooth to connect to my M1 MacBook Air and DaVinci Resolve 17.1 while a USB-C phone charger is plugged into the Speed Editor.

2. Only notice the lights on the editor when I actually have loaded DaVinci Resolve 17.1. If you don't see the lights simply being connected by Bluetooth but not in the software, this is normal in my opinion.

3. Speed Editor instructions are on page 39 of the DaVinci Resolve 17 PDF guide in your DaVinci Resolve 17 folder. At least this is in my M1 Mac installation folder.

Did a write up of my experience so far here in Reddit. https://www.reddit.com/r/davinciresolve/comments/khvibq/davinci_resolve_speed_editor_and_m1_macbook_air/

What was your order date? I ordered on 11/18, but radio silence from B&H.

No one is getting v17 as that's not even released yet (still in Beta). The dongle works for all versions, so it doesn't matter.

No. It’s still in beta so the bundle is shipped with DR 16. Mine didn’t include the usb-c cable that some apparently received.

Please post your order date once it arrives. It will help those of us who are still waiting for our B&H orders.

I got mine the week before Christmas from http://www.ProAC.co.uk in the UK. IT seems they are being doles out pro-rata and the Scan back order list (being a main distributor) is huge. I think I was in the first 10 at ProAV... I ordered the same day the offer was announced.

It came with the DVR Studio 16 package (SDHC card and license number) asi U downloaded the full DVR1 Studio 17 Beta and it accepted the license.
