Newbie Q: UHD HDR Workflow (from FX6 to Edit to Deliver)?

PostMon Dec 14, 2020 8:39 am

Repost... was in wrong forum :(
-----------------------
I've upgraded from a Canon XF400 and editing on Cyberlink Power Director to a Sony FX6 (just arrived) and also DaVinci Resolve Studio V17 but.... as a Davinci newbie I need some help in setting up Resolve.

Aim: To shoot, edit, and deliver in UHD 10-Bit 50fps 4:2:2 all I HLG/BT.2020.

I've so far configured the Sony FX6 to shoot in UHD 10-Bit 50fps 4:2:2 all I HLG/BT.2020 (runs around 500mbps) in a MXF wrapper that works well and is imported correctly into Resolve.

Help Needed: I'd love some help in how to Setup Resolve with:
Project Settings: To correctly handle, edit and display the FX6 HLG footage on my Philips 43" UHD HDR Monitor (1,000 peak nits)
Deliver Settings: To correctly render the timeline to UHD 50fps HLG 10-Bit so it triggers HDR mode on TV/PJ (and optionally in 4:2:2 all I). My playback of this material will be via HTPC's using madVR so while all I 4:2:2 is an odd delivery format it works for me and would save chroma degradation and long GOP compression. If this is not possible with Resolve then std long GOP UHD 10-Bit 4:2:0 as a delivery format would be fine.

Thanks in advance
Nathan

It it helps, here is a link to a 6sec sample of the FX6 UHD HDR (of a colour checker) that is about 250MB.

So for I've set the Project Settings --> Color Management and the Deliver Tab as per the attached Pic. I'm not sure this is correct?

This combination seems to work well. The resultant file plays as HDR and the levels look correct. I've modelled these settings to mirror (as close as I can) to that of HFR UHD HDR discs (such as Billy Lynn / Gemini Man)

I'm hoping for some feedback from the "old" hands. Does this config look "right" for HLG --> HDR workflow? I'd love to get this basic workflow bedded down.

Also, I'm happy to answer any questions I can on the FX6 or post sample clips.

Thanks

@Jim Simon - Thanks! The produced content looks good to my eye and is a valid HDR file :) The following link has a short example 40 Sec / 500GB file that shows https://behome.dyndns.info/index.php/s/FoENZQ4ZoWQ9xHw :
- Colour Checker
- Chickens @ 50fps
- Chickens @ 100fps on a 50fps timeline

I applied some stabilisation to the two Chicken segments and no colour matching. I also saved it as a MOV (not MP4) to keep the LPCM.

Using Jim's project settings, if I try to check / match the against a Color Checker using the "Color Match" function on the "Colour" tab, it seems to produce very odd results (see screen shot below). I'm guessing it is Newbie lack of understanding, but it appears I can only select Source Gamma (I've tried them all) and that the Target Gamma / Target Color Space always defaults to Linear / ACES.

My solution would be to skip Color Match. It's not as perfect a solution as you might think.

Thanks again - The Color Match did "work" on my previous Project Profile but was oversaturating Reds... so I'll take your advice and just give it a skip, as your suggested Project Profile certainly works well and looks great out of camera for HLG --> HDR. :)

After more playing, here is my current settings for both HQ Lan Delivery, and for WEB Streaming. Any feedback on tweaks would be great!
