Frequent crash to desktop - 3 GB GPU no longer enough?

PostMon Dec 14, 2020 5:33 pm

I opened DR for the first time in a while, updated it, then started a project (1920*1080, 24 FPS, default everything). However, at various points during editing and rendering, it just crashes straight to desktop. Things I was doing during those crashes include:
  • Adding clips to the timeline
  • Scrubbing through the timeline
  • Adding a title
  • Adding a transition
  • Rendering
  • Other basic tasks I might not be remembering
There was nothing advanced in use such as Fusion or even colour correction.

I rarely get the "DaVinci Resolve has stopped working" message from Windows (maybe 1/10); most of the time, it just drops straight to desktop.

I have a fairly basic system (see signature), but it seems to fit the minimums described in this forum's FAQ. Granted, it's pretty close to those minimums. I never expected good performance out of this, but it still ran Resolve miles better than Premiere in the past.

Inspecting Resolve in Process Hacker reveals it was usually using upwards of 1.5-2 GB of VRAM out of my 3 GB before those crashes. Could it be that it was trying to allocate more and that my GPU is no longer adequate for DR 16? Or are there other things I should be looking at too?

My solution would be to upgrade to the best spec'd 8GB RTX card I could afford.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

It doesn't appear to be a GPU memory related crash. But the crash dump is also not very specific as to what actually is causing the issue.

Can you provide a project export .drp of your "Projet final Jess" project?

You are using a pretty new AMD graphics driver. Might be an issue with that.

I see some Telegram crashes in the Windows System Error report. Might be worth disabling that, to see if that has any effect.

Are you running any other apps which are using significant GPU memory? If so, would be worth not running those to see if that helps.

Some of my attempts were made after quitting Chrome, Discord, and Slack (which were the only significant GPU memory consumers). I think Process Hacker was only reporting about 10-20 MB VRAM usage system-wide before launching DR.

I will send you a .drp as soon as I can; I'm in the process of uninstalling/reinstalling the program (additionally, I tried several different versions of DR 16 and 15, with no success).

Update: I've tried several different versions of DR, all with pretty much all other apps closed and less than 10 MB in GPU memory in use.

15 and 16 both crash straight to desktop.
14 and 17 Beta actually stay open and display either "GPU memory full", or, more frequently "GPU error -38". In OpenCL terms, that would be CL_INVALID_MEM_OBJECT, which would make sense since Process Hacker shows a drop in GPU mem usage just before that happens, so perhaps something happens to cause this and then DR tries to access a dangling object or something. Sometimes DR will actually die and display the crash report prompt, but then leave a zombie Resolve.exe process behind.

I think this continues pointing to not having enough GPU memory, but I could continue trying with different drivers to see if that changes anything. Either way, I'll move buying a new GPU a little sooner in my budget, because let's face it, 3 GB isn't optimal, and DR seems to use up a good 2 GB of it even on a basic no-filter 1080p timeline.

Let me know if you're still interested in seeing my project file, though.
