A slideshow of 3:2 and 4:3 pictures as a part of a movie

PostMon Dec 14, 2020 7:57 pm

Hi everybody,
I have a problem with a slideshow in my video project. Apart from plenty of 16:9 clips I would like to insert some 3:2 and 4:3 pictures, both horizontal and vertical ones and my goal is to animate them slightly (zoom in/out) or move from them from left to right. BUT input photos are 3:2 and 4:3, not 16:9 and I do not want cut them in any other software to 16:9 format and I would like to use orignal aspect to fill the whole 16:9 screen all the time (no black sides). How can I do it without using very sophosticated techniques/ stages to do it?
Thank you in advance,
Alek

Perfect use case for Dynamic Zoom. Make sure start (green) and end (red) rectangles are sized and placed to fall within your actual 3:2 or 4:3 image.

Could you write in steps how to do it?
Thank you.

When aspect ratios don't match, you have two valid options.

Crop the image, or get black around the frame.

I tend to favor the later. ;)
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

I would like to upload somehow the whole picture and in the case of vertical one animate (move) for instace for top to bottom. But width of the picture should be the same as the width of a screen. I just do not know yet how to do it in DR16.

Have you gone through any training yet? The Beginner's Guide at the very least should be on your ToDo list. ;)

Yes, I have seen some parts. But it would be much easier/quicker for me if somobody could just show me a simple scheme to do it. Maybe I am wrong but I could not find the answer for my question..

Some progress...:) I play with the Inspector, zoom 3:2 vertical photo to fill completely 16:9 screen, set zoom and position and use croping and a photo move from top to bottom. Now I have to set some settings to move horizontal photo from left to right. Next I have to know how to apply such settings to many clips (clip attributes?).

Yeah, I suppose that's true.

But...I do agree with the "teach a man to fish" philosophy.

I also like the saying and this philisophy. Today I have learned other things to speed up my workflow but I come back to slideshow soon.. :)

Jim Simon is 100% right: you have to go through the basic tutorials to get to this point, so you understand it in context. Dynamic Zoom is covered in detail in the Resolve 16.2 manual starting on p. 830. It's a good idea to read the entire manual so you're aware of all the basic functions in Resolve and how they might solve different problems you encounter.

Jim Simon is right and he is not write at the same time. Sometimes just one very short help can save plenty of time. I have figured out by myself the solution and do slide shows in inspector playing with different settings and of course combining video clips with pictures now. I know Dynamic Zoom, thank you for help but in the case of my issue it is the solution but as the last step. I just did not know how to fill 16:9 during the duration of picture show regardless of type of a photo (horizontal and vertical one). Now I know what and how to do it. I now have no time to play with Fusion and probably it will give more possibilities but for the time being I can slowly pan the photo from left to right, from bottom to top etc and of course add Dynamic Zoom. Many tutorials show that Fusion is good for it, I shall see them later. I was afraid I would have to deal with quite sophisticated techniques to do it but hopefully not.

I just watched this a few days back, there are more quick tutorials about this on YouTube if you care to search online. Faster than waiting for someone to reply exactly as you want it ...

Mr. AlexTech is very deeply motivated towards excellence on this topic and it shows in his tutorials and its great to see his passion and emotion involved in being a good teacher, over and above a dry or routine presentation covering all the features of the software.

As I have written before, I have figured out how to do it. Thank you for the link but it does not solve the problem, my goal was different. I wanted to insert let us say a 3:2 picture and allow DR to do a slideshow in that way the picture would fill completely 16:9 screen and also pan slowly, so the goal was to zoom to some extend, go to the left until end of the picture would be reached and keyframe it and then go to the right to the end of the picture and click keyframe. So during the whole slow panning (for instance 5 seconds was fine) the whole 16:9 frame would be filled. And it works nice now, I also added dynamic zoom and the final effect is ok. Then I copied the settings and pasted into other picture. In the case of vertical picture, duration time of 5 s is too fast to my taste so I have set for 9-10s. Of course zoom settings are different since I have to zoom much more and keyframes are set for bottom and top parts of image.
