After A Month Using BMD Control Surfaces

Hey Y'all, Thought I'd share my thoughts about after using the control surfaces-- the Editor Keyboard for a month and the new Speed Editor for a project. These are two control surfaces that do actually speed up editing. The jog wheel is right out of the old Sony editor, love it. I have tried all sorts of 3rd party devices for years-- the Editor Keyboard truly speeds things up. The jury is still out on the Speed Editor. Need more time with it. Here are some 5 things I'd change:

1) These two panels do not behave well together simultaneously. Using the Speed Editor and switching to the Editor Keyboard-- the Editor Keyboard jog wheel will disable itself. You can re-enable the jog wheel on the Editor Keyboard by unplugging the keyboard and plugging it back in-- but if you use the Speed Editor again, it disables the Editor Keyboard jog wheel again.

2) These keyboards need zoom functionality with the jog wheel. Why can I hold down option and move my mouse scroll wheel to zoom on the timeline, but I can't hold down option (or Z for that matter) and zoom with the jog wheel? This would seem to be an easy implementation. Need this on the Speed Editor, too.

3) This one can't be helped, but on the Editor Keyboard: the up arrow key cuts the right shift key in half. Try typing. Seriously. I can't tell you the number of times I go to the shift key and move my cursor to the beginning of the line. Maddening.

4) Search Entry/Inpoint. SHIFT + Mark In is too fussy of a keystroke. I'd rather double or triple tap the IN to move the playhead to the inpoint. I need to move to the inpoint way more often than clear the inpoint.

5) Everyone wishes these products worked with other apps. OK, I get it. This is about using Resolve. But why not take the Speed Editor and allow it to control an ATEM switcher? The Play/Stop button is ideal for a cut key, and the number pad could easily switch input sources. The jog wheel could be the T bar for dissolves. It's wireless, it would be PERFECT as a compact external wireless ATEM controller. It already works with the Editor Keyboard-- move the function to the Speed Editor, too.

Can't wait for the Fairlight controller. Already ordered.

Whilst I'm with you on most of your points, I think it's highly unlikely that a user would want to use both keyboard devices at the same time. If you're loaded, you buy the big daddy, whilst everyone else buys the baby brother!

There is a separate forum for Feature Requests.

viewforum.php?f=33

Best practice is to search first, to see if someone already asked. If not, post one idea per thread with a very brief description of the idea in the thread's title.

I agree. I think the correct answer is: don't do this.

I think pretty much all the features of the Speed Editor are already on the Editor Keyboard, so I'm not sure I see the point. It's kind of like trying to use two mice on one computer: you could theoretically do it, but it's inevitably going to cause a conflict and drive you crazy.
