Fusion keeps deleting my compositions (mid edit)

Hi there,

I've been using Resolve for a few months now, came over from Premiere pro, and I like it a lot. Lots of good things about it.

However, I'm trying to do an intro title for my youtube videos, and I made this pretty nice write on effect in fusion. The thing is that when I save the project and come back, it turns into a black screen. I tried saving the composition (which takes maybe 10 minutes now after doing it 5 or more times so I could render it before it got deleted) but when I try to import from the composition file it doesn't even have a media out node.

I'm new to this and not a professional editor, and I'm just building up my YouTube channel but the problems with the software frustrate me so much that I don't want to edit at all. Are there solutions for this?

I'm not sure if you're referring to Fusion standalone or the Fusion page in Resolve.
What you describe is not what should happen in either version though.
Especially saving a comp shouldn't take 10 minutes, or are you saying reconstructing the comp takes that much time?

It sounds like you're using Fusion within Resolve. This forum is mainly devoted to using standalone Fusion -- which can also be used with Resolve's Fusion -- so if you're using Resolve's Fusion Page, it might be best to post on either the Resolve forum (if you're running Resolve 16) or the Resolve Beta forum (if you're running Resolve 17).

In no case should something you saved not be there when you get back.

You might want to describe it in a little more detail as well. Are the nodes gone? Or are you seeing black in the Edit timeline? If you don't have a connection to a MediaOut in the Fusion Page, nothing will show up in Edit. Just an example.

Yes I'm using Resolve (this has happened in 16 and also beta version 17) - sorry I'm not a professional editor so I might not know everything that the pros do or understand easily.

It just deletes everything - randomly while I do other edits, I'll come back to it and it's just a black layer over what I previously did. To get around this I've been making the fusion manually (which is awful for my brand) every time I do a new video, and have the settings all written down so it looks almost the same. I tried exporting (no, the exporting doesn't take any time at all, it's making the whole fusion animation that takes the time), but when i import it, in fusion it has no nodes, without even a media out node.

Do i have to go through this whole process again and repost this in Resolve?

Well, I can't tell you what might be causing this. Be sure to post it in the Resolve 17 beta forum with steps on how to reproduce this.

What I CAN offer you is an alternative to writing everything down and that is: select all the nodes in your comp, copy them and then paste them in a notepad document. Yes, a plain old *.txt document.
This will preserve all nodes and settings and will allow you to copy/paste them back in in your new document. It's not the way you should have to work, but at least it beats writing everything down.

You're leaving out important details. It sounds, at first, like you have a clip, go into Fusion and add a bunch of nodes, come out of Fusion and a couple of minutes later when you play that part of the timeline, it's black and when you go into Fusion there are no nodes.

But then you talk about "every time I do a new video" which sounds like you are talking about a Fusion comp on a copied timeline or project.

You also mention exporting and importing. What commands are you using to export and import, and from where? Are you dragging a Fusion clip into the Media Pool and then exporting, or from within Fusion or...

And when you say "it's black" does that mean when you enter Fusion there are no nodes? Resolve has a boatload of ways to do things and exactly how you're doing them makes a difference.

Absolute worst-case workaround would be: in the Fusion tab, select all your nodes and do a CMD-C (or Ctrl-C on a PC) to copy. Then go to a text editor (not Word or something that's going to want to change the text) and paste. You'll see a boatload of text, which is the script that implements your Fusion comp. Save this. You can always reverse the process: copy from the text editor and paste back into the Fusion node area. But you really should not need to do this. Something is very wrong.

Take a step back and go through some of the training that BMD offers. The Beginner's Guide at the very least, but do also consider doing the Advanced Editing as well.
