M1 + Resolve: what size internal SSD?

PostWed Dec 16, 2020 4:45 pm

Given that Apple's new M1 chip apparently relies pretty heavily on the internal SSD to extend the built-in RAM, would getting a larger SSD significantly increase performance with Resolve?

I'm currently using an old Mac Mini with a 256GB internal SSD, and have about 60 GB free space. I'm planning to order a new M1 Mac Mini with the 512GB internal SSD which should comfortably cover my internal storage needs for the foreseeable future. However, would I get better performance with Resolve 17 if I spent the extra money for a 1TB internal SSD, which is way more space than I would otherwise need?

I'll of course order the full 16GB of RAM. Thanks for any advice!

I never have enough storage so I would get the 1TB.
That would also give u more swap space for M1 use.

Thanks Peter! I guess my question is how much of a performance improvement will the increased swap space of a 1TB SSD (instead of a 512GB internal SSD) provide? I'd be doing a fair amount of color grading, but fairly minimal (if any) work with Fusion.

This computer would probably be a stop-gap purchase until the M1x chip becomes available towards the end of next year, so I'd prefer to save the money if I can.

I'm new to Resolve but it seems that it works in a similar way as Photoshop in this respect. Photoshop uses so called 'scratch discs' and it's basically free disc space. I guess the more the better and having SSD instead of old school HDD will surely make it faster.

Swap space is minimal when compared to general storage.
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.
