This was a repeatable but new experience for me (video attached): I selected a join, pressed "control-T" to put the default cross-dissolve, accepted that a clip would be trimmed as a result... and what DR actually did was insert a big gap between the clips and put a near-side-only cross dissolve on the early clip (which was a simple generator).

I don't know what caused it, but repeated it and captured a short video in case there is a simple explanation (or it helps with bug resolution).

Extra info: turning the auto-select back on for track1 yielded normal behavior.

I don't think having the auto-select off should yield this behavior (the track is still being affected in several ways, so it's not like DR "protected" the track). But at least I know how to avoid the issue in future.
