Need to deliver, GPU out of memory. What now?

R16 studio

I edited BRAW 4K in a 1080 timeline and did lots of zooms into the picture and fusion compositions.

Now I need to deliver, switched the timeline to 4K and let it cache. After half of the timeline I got the error: GPU out of memory.
Does this affect delivery or just the timeline?

The final product is only HD, but for a clear picture with all the zooming in, I guess I need a cached 4K timeline for delivery do I?

What now? I need to deliver.

Have you seen any difference between a 4K timeline -- even just a piece of your timeline as a test -- that's Delivered at 1080 versus a 1080 timeline (that has underlying 4K video) that's Delivered at 1080? I'm pretty sure that Resolve doesn't downsize your 4K prematurely in the timeline. (Of course, you can mess up things in Fusion and cause premature downsizing -- you can do anything in Fusion -- but I doubt you did that. And if you did, I don't think a 4K timeline will fix that.) I could be wrong, of course.

Or are you thinking of the Youtube trick of creating a 1080 timeline, but upscaling to 4K at Delivery -- even though using 1080 material -- which looks better because Youtube allows higher bandwidth for 4K than for HD.

But (as far as I understood) when you deliver you have to switch the timeline to 4K otherwise the zooming in will not show full resolution. I read this in the forum, I don't know if it is true.

Maybe it is enough to put on highest quality in delivery: force sizing to highest quality, force debayer to highest quality?

What you say could be true. And maybe the full GPU proves it (i.e. it is truly working with more data). I'm new here and don't know Resolve's internals so could be totally wrong. But you could do a quick test to see if there's a perceivable difference with each method. (I.e. copy the first few clips from your 1080 timeline and paste into a 4K timeline and Deliver to 1080 from each.)

You could even bring both 1080 results into a new 1080 timeline and place them over each other and split screen them and wipe to see if there is any perceivable difference.

Hopefully, someone with 4K material delivery at 1080 can chime in and give better answers than I. Just trying to give some suggestions that might help in a crunch.

No, actually. Leave the timeline in HD.

I disagree with that philosophy.

You edit in the highest quality timeline you will need to deliver. There are other ways better suited to improve performance.

So if you're delivering in HD, edit in HD.

But if your delivering in UHD or C4K, then edit in such a timeline.

Finish your 1080P edits. Switch off the caching before you switchover to 4k, go straight to the render page and I think you will be okay to render 4k. The render will take a bit longer but caching eats a lot of resources.

If the final product is HD, there is (in most cases) very little (or nothing) to be gained, by switching the timeline to 4K and delivering HD, versus leaving the timeline at HD and delivering HD.

You might see a very slight difference on some fx, but it's too trivial too worry about, given the problems you've reported with a 4K timeline. And any difference which might be apparent on close study might not regarded as an improvement. Just a little different.

I misunderstood. As said above, if you are delivering in HD there is no benefit to working in 4K at any time.
