Video playback issues on AppleTV

PostThu Dec 17, 2020 4:14 pm

I’m a new user having upgraded from iMovie but am having a play back issue with my 1st rendered movie. The issue is that the audio plays fine but the video appears as a series of still images (roughly one image per scene). I’ve tried Googling solutions but have drawn a blank so hope someone has an idea on what I’m doing wrong.

My set-up is:
2017 3.4ghz iMac (retina / i5) with 16gb ram / running OSX11.1
Source movie is from Canon 5d mk3 (.mov format)
Edited on Resolve v16 & also v17.1B build 10
Project settings 1920x1080hd, 25fps,
Render settings I’ve tried default settings for YouTube in QuickTime & MP4

Playback
The good news is that I can import the video & play back the rendered video using AppleTV on the iMac.
The issue happens if I try to play video on the AppleTV app on my LG smart TV (connected to the same network via Ethernet) or on an iPad connected via WiFi. So I can & select the video but can only hear the audio and see a series of still frames.

Things I've tried:
- I’ve rendered different clips ranging from 10 secs to 6 mins and the same video playback problem occurs.
- I've tried using other default setting
- I've played other movies that are saved in the same location & have been imported into the same Apple TV library that have been rendered using iMovie or Adobe Premier. These all play fine.

Connectivity / bandwidth issues don't to be the issue so wonder if its my project/rendering settings which are the issue causing some conflict with AppleTV apps?

I’m happy to provide any other relevant information but attach a screen print of the main project settings.

I'm really enjoying using Resolve however as TV play back is a key requirement for me I hope that I can find a better solution than returning to iMovie.

Cheers

Test a short clip using the following settings. (With resolution and fps adjusted accordingly.)

My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Hi Jim,
Thanks for the quick response. I've changed the frame rate & key frames (although I couldn't see a check box for Encoder = Native) on my version. That has improved things a bit. The video changes frames more often so that playback looks like a flicker book. So not at all smooth but an improvement on a still image!
I attach a copy of the render settings as I see them.

Solved!

After more research and testing I've found that using DNxHD codec in Resolve worked if I then converted the rendered file into MP4 (Apple preset) using Handbrake. Hope this may help others struggling to get their videos to play on Apple TV on TVs / iPads / iPhones.
