Can't Apply Effects to Audio Clips

I swear I must be missing something obvious, but I read through the manual and I'm still lost. I'm trying to apply audio effects (built in or vst) to clips and it won't let me. I drag the effect on to the clip (as the manual says) and the window for the effect opens up. So far so good. The effect window doesn't seem to know it's on a clip though and has no effect on the audio. Then when I close the effect window it clearly never applied to the clip because the clip does not have the little icon showing there's an effect and in the inspector window the effects tab is greyed out. What could I be missing?

That's definitely not normal.

Post up some details. Media type. Which effect? What page you're working on? What version of Resolve? What platform? Etc.

The audio is all 24/48k wav files. I tried one of the built in Fairlight FX effects (don't remember which one, just grabbed one) and a couple different third party VST ones (Brusfri and Wavesfactory Cassette). This is in the Fairlight page. I'm in Resolve Studio 17 beta 3 on a 2019 16" Macbook Pro on Mac OS 11.0.1.

Maybe it's something with the beta? I downloaded the latest and haven't installed it yet. I could try that.

There's actually a new forum for version 17 that we're supposed to use.
