Ram Clock Speed vs Ram Size for Resolve and its tabs

PostFri Dec 18, 2020 11:20 am

Hi,
Just had my 2013 mac pro with 64GB of ram have a couple of ram modules die.
Have decided to replace all ram as it seems my system was getting too hot and cooking the ram.
Have since given it a thorough clean.
I found I could upgrade to 128 GB ram total, which was a good thing I thought as Fusion is really Ram intensive.
The ram i purchased was rated with a 1333 clock speed but after installing, shows up as 1066 on my system. The original ram that came with my system from apple is rated at 1866Mhz speed.
I have done a few initial tests and it seems that the system is running well with the 32 gig sticks and when intensive fusion work is going on it seems to really love the extra ram.
My question is:
Resolve seems to be more happy with ram size than clocking speed... is there any guru out there who can tell me how Resolve and its various tabs work with relation to Ram size Vs clock speed..... it seems to me that the amount of ram is more important.
Really look forward to some input here.
Cheers

If you run out of ram, it is bad. If your ram is slower, it is just slower, and how much it slows down actual processes is questionable, relation isn't linear because there are lots of components at play which can hide most of the ram speed difference.

Being one of the fastest components in your system that stores data it will be nearly impossible to have a bottleneck due to RAM speed. It will be of greater benefit to be able to store as much data as possible inside RAM

Thanks for your responses.
Sounds like quantity is better than speed with respect to ram.
Can anyone guide me into the best "Ram" test for resolve and its tabs, i.e edit, fusion & colour?
or do I just load up Fusion and test that to its max...
our facility had two identical systems, the other one is still functioning fine with 64 gig ram and I now have 128gig ram.
Can anyone recommend a test scenario between the various tabs of resolve or should I just load up a Fusion project.
I suppose I am asking if the various tabs work differently with ram?
most likely a question for Blackmagic?

Cheers
