Newbie question: difference between split and subclip

PostFri Dec 18, 2020 3:24 pm

So, I'm not sure when to use make subclip, and when to use split.

And, supplementary question for Resolve 17—I see a split key on my new speed editor. Is there a way to make a subclip with the speed editor?

Editor's choice, really. For myself, I don't find subclips a necessity.

As you're new to Resolve, may I suggest a little training? The Beginner's Guide is an excellent introduction and will answer a lot of basic questions new users inevitably have.

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

They are very different.
Split is for breaking clips apart on the timeline when editing. I use this all the time.
Subclip is more for organizing your media into smaller chunks. You can basically create a subsection of a longer clip in your media pool. I don't use it often, but I can imagine several cases it would be very useful.

Subclips are essential if you want to reduce your original footage by Media Management.
