Layer node blending modes still work wrong

PostFri Dec 18, 2020 6:37 pm

This isn't new for v17, but are there any plans to fix this? They work wrong in YRGB Color managed as well as in ACES.

For example, it's impossible to create film halation effect using 'add' blending mode in linear gamma in YRGB Color Managed or in ACES. Blacks immediately become crushed despite of 'add' operation without any negative values.

And to not create another thread: Canon Cinema Gamut color space has wrong white point in Resolve. It has been in v16 as well.

I am having the same issue. Blending modes like "Add" do not work in ACES. How are we supposed to use layer nodes at all? Is there a specific secret ACES procedure which is only known to wizards?

Currently I am applying a workaround by qualifying the highlights when adding them on top of the normal layer during the halation technique, to avoid crushing the image. But this workaround is really bad, and blending operations are so fundamental they beg for fixing.

You should both describe your settings and procedure more explicitly. I’m not seeing crushed blacks in YRGB managed using either the add blend mode in either edit page layers or color page layers. I have a feeling you’re linearizing something that doesn’t need to be linearized.

The question is not about the procedure, I am doing it correctly. The blenging modes problem is probably better demonstrated using a simple example: for instance, let us take the greyscale bars and try adding a copy over itself. In YRGB Color Managed the layer mixer lightens the image, but when switching the project to ACEScct, it starts to darken the image as well. What am I doing wrong, what is happening here?

ACEScct, nothing changed in the node graph, only the project settings.

I reproduced the gray bars example, above, in v17.1 and it works correctly (as expected, not as described by OP) for me in DaVinci YRGB Color Managed mode. Haven't tried ACES though, maybe ACES is broken.

I checked by looking at the bars in the Waveform as I toggled one of the layers off and on, and double-checked by displaying RGB values at the cursor. (You have to move the cursor to see the new values after enable or disable.)

I wasn’t criticizing. I was asking for both you and OP to explain your procedure, because there’s more than one way to do it. Now that you’ve elaborated, that looks like the method I tested with RCM, which worked for me, maybe give that a shot.
