When importing a project I lose cuts, markers, edits, etc.

This is my first post on this forum, hope I'm not breaking any rules.
So I think it's pretty self explanatory, when importing a Project I lose all markers, cuts and everything else.
I want to make it clear that I didn't lose what I did, everything is there video and audio wise, it's just edited togheter like it's the final version, for example, can't edit a video transition anymore, it's baked into the video now. I just wanted to resume working on it but at this point seems impossible.
Can I get it back to where it was and have all my markers, cuts and so on? Did I do something wrong?
