Multiple Timelines and Fairlight Effects

PostMon Dec 21, 2020 5:15 pm

Hi all, I'm new to DaVinci Resolve and am working on a project where I have separate timelines for different parts. I am then building a main timeline by dragging in all the smaller timelines.

However, any Fairlight effects (i.e. vocal cleanup) that I add in the sub-timelines are not being reflected when I pull that timeline in to the main timeline.

Am I missing something here, or is this just not possible in Resolve? Do I need to only add audio effects in the main timeline? This would defeat my whole purpose of having multiple timelines.

Thank you!

It should work.

That said, when I first switched I found it better to bypass the "nested" workflow and do the entire project in one timeline.

Especially once I got to audio.

I don't think you are missing anything. I see it as "a feature, not a bug" issue, and possibly one day Resolve will decide that that feature needs to change so that it works as expected. Maybe there is some option that needs to be switched on, but I haven't found it.

So, until Blackmagic fixes that, I suppose the best solution is just to render audio from embedded timeline and then putting it back into embedded timeline, and soloing that track. This is actually not that bad workflow - it has some benefits, especially if you have very long timeline with lots of audio effects - by this method you essentially prerender those effects, so Resolve then can handle audio in realtime without breaking a sweat. And if you need to make changes, everything is there - just mute the track with rendered audio, and repeat the process.

I just tested this in Studio 17b6 for Windows, and it works fine.

I played a little with it, with regular Resolve 17b6. It seems that default channel strip effects go through when putting one timeline into another, but additional FairlightFX and VST effects don't (I mean those effects that are in the Mixer under Effects, that one can add them by clicking the + button.

Also, what I just realized, that for those additional effects to work in the current timeline, Insert for the specific tracks needs to be turned on. Now I'm confused what is the purpose of that. Reference manual states:
Insert: Enables the routing of effects from Blackmagic audio interface hardware to
outboard effects boxes and back again. This button can be toggled to enable/disable
such routing.

So it should be for routing track sound through external hardware, but if it's not turned on, additional FairlightFX and VST effects won't get processed at all. Is the description or implementation wrong? Or?

Nevertheless, even when you turn on Insert field for all tracks, including Main output track, when you put that timeline into another timeline, none of those FairlightFX and VST effects get processed, as if Insert was switched off.

Tested this again in 17b6 for Windows using a very obvious Reverb effect on the Track, and that effect came through just fine in the nest.

I removed the effect and that was also reflected properly in the nest.

I then added an Echo effect to one clip, and that also came through correctly in the nest.

Basically, I can't make this not work.
