Free to Studio, Media Intermittently Offline

PostWed Dec 23, 2020 11:31 am

Hello,

I just bought the Studio version and I was excited to continue to work on a project I was already working on in the free version. Playback in the free version is perfect. Now, in the Studio version, I get to play the media but I get "Media Offline" every couple of frames during playback. Assets in the Media Pool also playback the same as those in the timeline (intermittent Media Offline frames)

I tried disabling Hardware Acceleration for h264 decoding. No dice.
Restarting doesn't help as it doesn't help trying to disconnect and reconnect the database.

Media is H264, 1080p
W10 OS
GPU 2080 Max Q

Any help is highly appreciated!

EDIT: Free version was 16.2.7 and Studio version is 16.2.8

EDIT 2: I try to export the project to see if the Media Offline frames export as well but I get the following error:

" Clip XXXXX could not be decoded corectly. Please check if the clip is still available on the drive"

You're using only internal drives? No removables, no networked drives?
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Using external drives.

Worth noting, though, the project works as expected with the free version of Resolve so I suspect that drives are not to blame.

Nervertheless, I do recommend using only internal drives for this work.

Thank you. With a laptop I cannot use any other internal drives and the project is about 3TB in size. Been working on it successfully from the same external drive for about 3 years no issues until now that I opened it with Resolve Studio

You've run into one of the reasons why Laptops aren't suitable for this work - insufficient internal hard drives.

You need a desktop. I advise a 5 drive setup as a starting point.

System
Databases
Gallery, Cache, Optimized Media and Proxies
Exports
Media

Thank you again. I'd like to focus the thread on solving the issue of my media not playing properly with Resolve Studio where it works as intended in free Resolve on the same set up, same conditions other than free vs paid version of the software.

Admittedly, this was happening to me in free 16.2, I do not have any ideas on why they would be different. However, very similar error. Viewer would flash as media offline and giving the same error on render.

My issue was that the source clip I was taking from was set at a variable frame rate. Putting the clip through handbrake and limiting the fps worked. Nifty tutorial for that can be found on ustudio.

You can also try pushing through the render regardless of media being offline by checking Menu > Davinci Resolve > Preferences > User > UI Settings > "Stop renders when a frame or clip cannot be processed" (Bottom option) If you go that route, recommend doing a test render instead of the full project, as you may still have media offline flashing in the final render.

Best of luck!

@mogofwin

Lo and behold, that appears to be it. I am now "handbraking" every clip I have. What is baffling is that this is only happening with Resolve Studio, but not with Free Resolve. Why? This is still a mystery to me. I've working on this same project for a number of years from 12.5 and have never seen Resolve's behaviour like this. Much less expected it to change when I went from the free version to Studio. As if I had to pay for it to be brought to my attention that most clips do indeed have a variable framerate, though Resolve never had an issue with it before.

I very much thank you to have signed up and posted the reply as I noticed you only have one post in the whole forum!

Thank you!

Thank you so much for sharing the constant framerate solution. This issue has been making me use my Mac for edits (when I have a far more competent PC) since my Windows box kept having these media offline issues.

That solved it for me with only a few minutes of re-encoding media that appears problematic.
