Multicam sequence brightness clip levels

PostWed Dec 23, 2020 4:10 pm

Howdy y'all. I'm running resolve studio licensed 17 beta

I have a timeline that I've created as a multicam sequence. Is I've brought in other clips, I've been able to get brightness adjustments all the way up to my current mastering limit of 1000 nits. However, the actual multicam shots are brightness limited around 700-800 nits. Trying to push specular highlights higher just results in a super hard clip. The source timeline for the multicam sequence (the one that shows all of the clips on different tracks, but time aligned has full adjustability and do not clip until 1,000 nuts.

All of the video was shot in bt2028, hlg. I'm using those input and output settings, with davinci wide gamut settings for the timeline.

What do I need to do here?

Couple thoughts.

I have seen RCM hard clip my media unnaturally. (And that was BRAW!) I found I got better results using ACES.

Another consideration. Think of the Multicam Clip as a picture frame, and the original clip as a the picture inside that frame. You can make adjustments to either. In this case, I recommend working on the original picture (clips), not the frame (Multicam).

That makes total sense, for sure. Here's the thing though. The original clips, in the timeline where they're all visible and on separate tracks, with the time correction...they are showing all the way up to 1000 nits.
Once it's on the timeline (where I've selected the appropriate angles and timings) they're clipped on mac brightness and are noticeably duller... The clips I've layered over them are showing full brightness spectrum.

Does that make sense? If I adjust from the "source timeline" it doesn't matter. It still clips the multicam shots in the multicam timeline. (But not other clips brought into that timeline)

I attached screenshots so you could see what I mean. The clip that's showing brightness limited is not like that in the source timeline. So no matter where I edit it from, it's totally jacked up in the multicam timeline.

Davinci YRGB Color Managed
DaVinci Wide Gamut

Output bt2020, rec2100 hlg

All timelines are using "same as project" settings

Literally all color grades look beautiful unless it's the scenes from the multicam output timeline... Those are brightness limited (only when viewing from the final multicam output timeline, theyre fine in the source timeline)

OK.

As I said, I found issues when I used RCM, so I just don't. Things work as expected when I use ACES.

For anybody wondering, there was no solution. I literally redid a 16 camera multicam timeline from scratch.. The colors worked the second time, don't have a clue what was wrong.
