Resolve ignores my system audio device

My system audio device is my speakers. However, Resolve ignores that and plays back sound through another sound device (a monitor). I can even select the speakers manually in Resolve's "Preferences" and it doesn't seem to make a difference. Sometimes it works as I want, but I don't know when. Seems like it has a mind of its own.

How is your audio set up? This is mine using just the built in Realtek audio. It has worked perfectly this way for the last four years.

@Charles, do you change sound devices during the day? In my work environment I frequently need to change between external speakers and headphones. I use the system setting so that DR will follow wherever I have sound going. It often does... and then will suddenly get confused and be "one off" in the list of devices set at the Win10Pro system level (choose 1st entry and DR uses 2nd, etc.). This causes the same "audio coming from a monitor" problem for me that the original poster noted.

No, I don't change devices. If I want to use headphones they are plugged into the Realtek output. Using system settings means you are at the mercy of Windows and it's quirks.
One thing to check, as you have usb speakers, is the usb hubs' power management to make sure they are not set to turn off. They will if they see no action.

I have the same problem in 17beta6, I load resolve play video but have no audio, then I check audio settings and output is my monitor rather than speakers. However in my case I can manually change output to speakers and restart and it will play audio again through speakers

As long as audio doesn't keep changing now that it's set to manual I don't have a problem. Will update if it goes back to monitor

Hey ALL!

First thing... Resolve 17b is an incredible VIDEO EDITING platform! KOUDOS BM!

I'm Playing GRADED Canon 4K RAW on the Timeline Flawlessly with the NVIDIA Studio Driver (beta), using no Optimized Video or Proxies! New Features are awesome too!
Not liking losing the ability to Configure Workspaces and FIXED Window positions... AT ALL.
A lot of versatility lost... for Multi-monitor configurations by losing Floating & Docking windows.
Not sure what was behind that decision.

But... as usual, when something feels right... I'm usually ALL IN!
So... I went in on Resolve Studio, Fusion Studio... and now waiting for my Resolve SPEED Edit controller that I had to ALSO buy... 30 days after I bought Studio 16, then 17b was released, and NOW it's FREE with purchase of Studio... not a good sign... oh well, another story. Never did get a response from Peter Chamberlin.

Sorry for venting... But now I find myself a bit more perplexed over the fact that after all the incredible features that went into the new V17 (17b current Public release)...

It seems BM didn't spend a lot of TIME on the Audio I/O capabilities... I guess, unless you get into FAIRLIGHT HARDWARE! GREAT JOB on all the AUDIO EDIT capabilities tho!...
Very Pro Tool-esque, Yay!
BUT... when I actually got under the hood and tried to configure my studio hardware I/Os and using the Fairlight page. WOW... A MAJOR let down.

Here's the I/Os that I've tried working with... (Won't mention the investment here)

1. AVID HD I/O (32ch with PCIe HD Native card - ASIO - Dedicated Driver)
2. MOTU 424-PCIe with 24i/o (24ch with 424 PCIe - WaveRT - Dedicated Driver)
3. Cakewalk VS700R (w/700C Console) (Dedicated Driver ASIO USB or ASIO4ALL)

The HW is shared between 2 SW different systems on the same machine.
1. Booting into Window 7 Pro 64-bit drive.
- For Pro Tools 11HD Native and Resolve 16 Studio, Fusion 9
- Its looking like All High-end audio recording, now must STAY in Windows 7 after being ABANDONED by AVID when moving to Win 10 UNLESS... I purchase a $600 I/O license to use the $12K worth of HW that I already OWN and another $600 to upgrade Pro-Tools with less needed features.
- So, WIN 7.... EVERYTHING WORKS GREAT!

So, I didn't have a NEED to use AUDIO features of the Fairlight Page in Resolve 16... aside from a few minor edits here and there, ADR and occasional track...But was Excited for Resolve 17! Just LowRes out to Pro Tools, dial it in... and bring back the Audio Track!

ENTER Windows 10!
Being oh so Familiar with the PAIN and COSTS associated with WINDOWS OS upgrades... I ALWAYS need to be forced into a WALL to finally do it! After recently tooling up 4K production Cameras and junk... Resolve 17 from the video side, took me there... over Media Composer!... and the ENDLESS costs associated with THAT path... AND keeping in mind what AVID has done to ABANDON dedicated perpetual licensed clients by forcing SUBSCRIPTIONS and LIMITING the ability to continue using the perfectly functioning hardware and SW, that people (including myself) have spent 10's of thousands on! Anway...

2. Booting into Windows 10 Pro 64 drive (Clean Install on Separate SSD)
- For Resolve 17 (and up) with HIGH EXPECTATIONS for AUDIO!
- NO Pro Tools... no AVID in Windows 10!
So went ALL in on Resolve in Late Oct...

ENTER Resolve 17 on WIN 10...
NOW I discover that in Resolve 17, I can see EVERY I/O channel that I have available! COOL!
- MOTU 424PCIe w/24i/o - I see 24 WaveRT channels, 12 Pair IN and OUT channels
- Cakewalk VS700R - I can 10 ASIO IN channels, 12 OUTs (including Phantom)
- 32 Channels of AVID HD I/Os in Windows 10... become BOAT ANCHORS and even with more MONEY... at this point... I'm SURE the HD Native I/Os and PCIe card won't work in Resolve either!

FINALLY... THE ISSUES that I see EVERYONE talking about...
After Loading and configuring ALL drivers and testing Hardware I/Os outside of Resolve
(Win 10 Pro 64) ... ALL is GOOD!

- In Resolve 17b... Can see EVERY single INPUT and OUTPUT channel in the Fairlight Configuration...
from BOTH I/Os connected... YES! <Getting Excited>

- Can I MAP INPUTS to a Track/Channel from any I/Os??... KINDA!... WAIT... ONLY TWO?... HUH?? <Excitement diminishing> NOTE: Can NOT PATCH in LIST View, Only TILE view.

Apparently I can ONLY PATCH whatever is setup as DEFAULT in WINDOWS Audio Record configuration... WHAT??... Really???... This is a joke RIGHT??? <my fault?>

- Do the only 2 of 34 Channels I have the ability to PATCH, actually work after being PATCHED to a NEW TRACK?...Like, is there ANY AUDIO level when the "R" button is ARMED on the TARGET track??... NOPE (Tested MOTU - 2 WaveRT ch, Audio Wire to 424PCIe & Cakewalk - 2 ASIO ch - USB) <Excitement GONE>

- Can I get AUDIO from ANYTHING??? ... NOPE!.... <sinking feeling>

- ADR Audio input working... NOPE... <feeling really crappy now>. (DIMMED)

Black Magic touts the capability of 2000 Audio Tracks! That's really COOL!
Kinda stinks that if you can get any inputs to work... You'd have to do it ONE or TWO TRACKS at a time!

So... does ANYONE have any RESOLVE to these AUDIO issues presented in this... a continuation of my non-COVID story of 2020?

I was thinking that MAYBE... uninstall Resolve and Reinstall with a known good Audio configuration... Seeing drivers on reinstall?... but then... will any changes in drivers or Windows Audio configuration be reflected in the next Startup of Resolve.

On a SIDE NOTE; Kinda POSITIVE... All WAVES VST1 & 2 Audio Plugins Load and work in the Fairlight Page... on playback of EXISTING Audio tracks! EXCCEEELENT!
VST3 Plugins?... NOPE... <...Still feeling crappy>.

TRIED uploading a few types of Attachment with images... Got the Following for"PDF"
The extension pdf is not allowed.

"DOCX"
The attachment’s file size is too large, the maximum upload size is 2 MB.
Please note this is set in php.ini and cannot be overridden.

I will add PHOTOS / Screen shots in a follow-up POST should anyone request them, not sure I can.

@Richard, a suggestion: try zipping the pdf and uploading the .zip, which is accepted (up to the size limit)

UPDATE to my initial post:

AVID I/Os are now fully functional (for PT anyway 11.3.2 HD Driver)... so NO LONGER "Boat anchors" in Win 10....wheew!

Pro Tools 11HD Native 11.3.2 is now working in Windows 10 Pro 64, Along with HD Native PCIe & HD IO interface HW. EuCon is kinda functional as well... once!... then some strange disconnect issues.

But, if anyone else is having an issue with PT & HD HW on Win 10... The issue is the PACE licensing that gets installed, causing THREAD_HADLING_EXPEPTION.

So,
1. Install as normal (with iLok in USB port) - DON'T RESTART!
2. Delete newly installed "PACE License Support Win64" from Programs & Feat.
3. Install NEW iLok License Mgr from iLok.
4 Reboot!
5. Done!

Still Can not see AVID HD Native PCIe in DR 17b6 tho... but some progress anyway!

Mine worked fine, too, before Resolve 17 Beta. It's a bug. I'm just letting BlackMagic know so their devs can take care of it.

I think it's still working for most folks even in 17 beta. For BMD to correct a bug, they'll need to be able to reproduce it.

So what's different about your setup that it's not working?
